Role overview
The City of Wagga Wagga is looking for a creative and driven Communications & Engagement Officer to join its Communications & Engagement Team. This position supports the delivery of communication and community engagement activities that help inform, connect, and motivate the local community.
The successful candidate will contribute to promoting Council initiatives, handling media contacts, and strengthening the organisation’s public reputation through engaging content and effective communication approaches.
Position details
- This is a permanent full-time role of 35 hours per week.
- The remuneration package starts at $3,343.26 gross per fortnight and may progress to $4,011.91 gross per fortnight, plus superannuation.
- Pay will be adjusted from 1 July 2026 in line with the Local Government (State) Award.

Key duties
- Plan and contribute to communication activities such as community engagement programs, educational campaigns, marketing work, and media coordination.
- Serve as a communication point between Council, local residents, and media organisations, including arranging meetings, briefings, interviews, and promotional activities.
- Investigate, draft, and prepare polished content for multiple channels, including media statements, articles, social media updates, newsletters, promotional pieces, and internal messaging.
- Prepare material for Council publications such as Council News, including writing, editing, proofreading, managing artwork, and working with designers.
- Take photographs and video footage at Council events for use in promotion and corporate communication.
- Develop written and visual material while overseeing Council’s social media accounts and engagement website.
- Work closely with teams across the organisation to ensure the community receives timely and accurate information.
- Participate in meetings, events, workshops, and community engagement activities as needed.
About you
You should be a creative communicator with strong relationship-building skills and a genuine interest in engaging with communities.
Essential requirements
- A tertiary qualification in Journalism, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a closely related area, such as a Bachelor of Marketing.
- A current Class C driver’s licence.
Experience and capability
- Proven background in communications, media, marketing, or a similar discipline.
- Confident use of Microsoft Office and related tools, including Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Well-developed skills in planning, organisation, and time management.
- Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and on your own.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with strengths in stakeholder engagement, negotiation, and presenting information.
