About Ex-Books and the Role
Ex-Books has successfully developed and launched four live SaaS products tailored for African markets without a CTO, an engineering team, or external funding, leveraging AI-assisted development tools. Now, they seek a Co-founder — Head of Technology to take ownership, scale, and advance this technology beyond its current state.
Current Technology Stack & Roadmap
- Four operational products on a shared infrastructure using Supabase (PostgreSQL + authentication), Lovable frontend, Netcash and PayPal for payments, Tapfiliate for affiliate marketing, PostHog and Google Analytics 4 for analytics, and Resend for email services.
- Billing support for South African Rand (ZAR) and US Dollar (USD).
- An established 24-month technology roadmap aiming to elevate product technical readiness levels from 4 to 7.
Key Development Projects
- Developing AI-powered quote estimation for BuilderPro, using machine learning models on South African construction costs.
- Rebuilding applications as offline-first Progressive Web Apps (PWA) optimized for low-bandwidth situations and on-site use.
- Expanding SADC regional support including EcoCash, M-Pesa, Orange Money, and multiple currencies (ZWL, BWP, NAD, ZMW) integration.
- Fine-tuning large language models (LLMs) on South African tax legislation for ComplyEasy, targeting compliance with VAT Act, CIPC, COIDA, and B-BBEE.
- Direct API integrations with SARS eFiling and CIPC systems.
- Creating an NLP-based craving-trigger recognition engine for PuffFree vaper cessation app.
- Packaging all PWA products as native Android and iOS applications.
- Developing shared backend infrastructure across a five-product portfolio.
Candidate Profile
- Possess 3 to 7+ years experience in full-stack or backend development roles.
- Proficient working with Supabase, PostgreSQL, modern JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks, and API integrations.
- Proven track record delivering production-level software beyond just side projects.
- Keen interest and experience in AI/ML implementations including LLM fine-tuning, NLP, and ML model deployment.
- Entrepreneurial mindset focused on ownership and leadership, rather than just a standard job role.
- Preferred qualifications include experience with PWA architecture, mobile money APIs, and sectors like health technology, regulatory technology, or construction technology.
- Familiarity with South African regulatory APIs such as SARS and CIPC is an added advantage.
Compensation and Equity
This is a sweat equity co-founder position offering a meaningful ownership stake with vesting tied to technical milestones. There is no salary at this stage. The company is in the middle of fundraising efforts from venture capital and TIA grants to support growth.
