Role Overview
The Climate Impact Specialist role is a highly specialized technical position focused on verifying that climate projects funded by GCF deliver credible, measurable, and scientifically sound outcomes. The role contributes throughout the project lifecycle including origination, evaluation, execution, and portfolio enhancement, acting as the essential quality assurance mechanism for climate impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and validate climate mitigation and adaptation results to ensure quality and consistency
- Assess greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction methodologies and estimates
- Evaluate theoretical frameworks and justifications supporting climate initiatives
- Ensure all projects align with GCF’s result frameworks and investment standards
- Enhance tools and methods for rigorous impact measurement and assessment
- Support technical design and structuring of climate projects and programs
- Contribute actively to pipeline development and project authorization processes
- Assist in monitoring, reporting, and adaptive management of projects
- Perform portfolio-level analyses to maximize impact effectiveness
- Advise accredited entities, project developers, countries, and partners on strengthening climate measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems
- Develop guidance, tools, and best practices for impact evaluation and assessment
- Engage in capacity building activities regionally to support climate impact expertise
- Contribute to institutional coordination including results management and organizational learning systems
- Support improvements in data management systems for tracking climate impact
- Capture and disseminate lessons learned from project execution
- Engage in cross-divisional initiatives within climate finance
Qualifications & Experience
- Master’s degree in climate science, environmental science, sustainability, or a closely related discipline; or a Bachelor’s degree supplemented with relevant experience
- At least 9 years of professional experience in climate impact, MRV systems, or results-based management
- Strong expertise in GHG accounting and climate-related methodologies
- Experience working within international development or climate finance sectors
- Exposure to projects across both public and private sectors
Essential Skills
- In-depth knowledge of climate mitigation and adaptation assessment processes
- Familiarity with IPCC guidelines and MRV frameworks
- Advanced analytical and data interpretation capabilities
- Proficient technical writing and communication skills
- Experience with applying results frameworks and performance indicators
- Ability to translate complex technical climate data into clear decision-making information
