Job description
Overview
The Imperial in Exeter is hiring a Cleaner to help keep the pub spotless and welcoming. The focus of the role is maintaining high standards of cleanliness across the venue so customers enjoy a better overall experience. This is a hands-on position with early starts, late finishes and flexible shifts across mornings, evenings, weekends and late nights.
What the role involves
You will be responsible for cleaning all parts of the pub thoroughly and consistently. The job includes routine cleaning tasks, safe use of cleaning products and equipment, and making sure any issues that need attention are reported promptly.
Working pattern
This is a 16-hour-per-week role. Scheduled working hours are 04:00 to 08:00 from Monday through Sunday.
Who the employer is looking for
The ideal candidate is upbeat, motivated and able to work well under pressure. Previous experience is not required. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, reliability, friendliness and comfort working as part of a team are the main qualities needed. This role may not be appropriate for applicants under 18 because of the shift pattern and periods of lone working.
Pay and benefits
The role offers a competitive hourly rate of £12.91, along with a range of workplace benefits and rewards. These include a free meal and drink while on shift, a 20% discount on food, drinks and hotel accommodation for you and up to three guests when off duty, an extra £1 per hour for hours worked between midnight and 5:59am, a bonus scheme worth up to 19% of pay, paid holiday, free shares after a qualifying period, and a loyalty reward programme. Guaranteed-hours and variable-hours contracts are also available.
Training and development
The employer provides structured training and strong development support. Team leaders and managers often begin in front-line roles, and this position may lead to cross-training opportunities in the bar, kitchen or hotel. There are also routes into apprenticeships, management academies, and future progression to team-leader or shift-leader responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Keep customer areas, toilets, the bar, kitchen, staff spaces and outdoor areas clean to a high standard.
- Carry out daily, weekly and monthly cleaning duties in line with standard operating procedures.
- Use cleaning chemicals and equipment correctly and safely.
- Check stock levels of cleaning supplies and let the manager know when replenishment is needed.
- Report maintenance concerns and pest-control issues to the duty manager.
- Interact courteously with customers by greeting them and saying thank you and goodbye.
- Complete induction, job-specific and refresher training, and support ongoing service improvements.

Progression
The company notes that many current leaders and managers started in kitchen or bar roles, and this position can be a starting point for broader progression within the business.
