Clean Transportation Project Manager - Kenya

Overview

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is seeking a motivated and entrepreneurial professional to lead its vehicle policy initiatives in Kenya. This role entails fostering and maintaining partnerships with various stakeholders including government bodies, NGOs, academia, industry, and media. The position supports the development of policies such as fuel-efficiency standards and zero-emission vehicle mandates to enhance the environmental and energy performance of Kenya's road transportation sector. As ICCT's inaugural on-the-ground representative in Kenya, the successful candidate will autonomously guide ICCT's presence while collaborating closely with international teams.

Key Duties

• Act as ICCT's primary in-country liaison, establishing and nurturing collaborations with Kenyan authorities, NGOs, academia, industry players, and media.
• Contribute to shaping ICCT’s Kenya-specific policy approach in conjunction with global program staff, providing research insights to support policy formulation.
• Coordinate stakeholder engagement activities including public conferences and private meetings focused on transport policy advancement.
• Prepare and review diverse communications materials such as technical reports, policy briefs, articles, blogs, and social media content summarizing research findings.
• Plan and implement outreach and media initiatives in partnership with ICCT’s global communications team to boost visibility and impact of ICCT’s research within Kenya.
• Conduct both quantitative and qualitative analyses of vehicle emission reduction technologies and operational strategies to inform policy decisions.
• Operate independently as the Kenya-based ICCT lead, making informed decisions and maintaining alignment with global teams.

Candidate Profile

• Proven experience engaging with Kenya’s policy-making environment and established networks within government, industry, NGOs, and media sectors.
• Strong skills in stakeholder engagement, collaborative public policy development, and relationship management with diverse actors.
• A Master’s or Ph.D. in environmental science, engineering, transportation, energy resources, environmental policy, or related studies; or equivalent professional experience.
• At least three years of relevant experience involving stakeholder interaction and/or transportation research.
• Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
• Excellent problem-solving capacity, interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and result-driven mindset.
• Willingness and availability for occasional domestic and international travel.
• Experience or familiarity in crafting or supporting media and communications strategies, including press relations.
• Capability in technical analysis and report writing related to vehicle efficiency, electric vehicles, and transportation decarbonization policies is advantageous.
• Desirable familiarity with data analysis and manipulation software or tools.

Additional Information

This role is preferably located in Nairobi but candidates from other areas within Kenya may be considered. The position reports to the Emerging Markets Director at ICCT. Candidates must demonstrate self-motivation, resourcefulness, creativity, rapid learning aptitude, and a commitment to addressing global health and environmental challenges through transportation policy work.
