Job description

Position Overview

The City Marshal role focuses on making sure city codes and ordinances are followed. The position involves field inspections, complaint handling, documentation, enforcement actions, and coordination with other departments and outside agencies.

Key Duties

  • Inspect substandard housing, enforce city and state code requirements, and inform property owners and tenants about violations and needed corrections.
  • Review complaints about possible city ordinance breaches and carry out investigation work.
  • Return to properties for follow-up checks to confirm that required fixes have been completed on schedule.
  • Prepare reports and keep inspection records organized and up to date.
  • Issue citations and provide courtroom testimony when required.
  • Work with other departments and external agencies to support enforcement activities.
  • Answer phone questions from owners, builders, contractors, and other members of the public.
  • Inspect businesses to verify that proper licenses and occupational tax certificates are in place.
  • Search property records as part of investigation and enforcement work.
  • Serve citations during food safety inspections and testify in court when needed.
  • Write parking tickets and remove illegal signs from public right-of-way areas.
  • Deliver council packets and other confidential paperwork securely.
  • Carry out additional duties related to the role.

Required Knowledge and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of code enforcement inspection methods and practices.
  • Comfort using computers and job-related software tools.
  • Understanding of property record research methods.
  • Familiarity with applicable federal, state, and county laws, city ordinances, and department rules and procedures.
  • Ability to use photographic equipment effectively.
  • Strong file and record management skills.
  • Problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to set priorities and manage planning tasks.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Completion of specialized field-related training beyond basic high school-level skills.
  • Experience level generally comparable to one to three years of work or service, with enough background to understand subordinate roles and resolve routine issues.
  • Ability to obtain, or already hold, a valid Georgia driver’s license for the vehicle or equipment used in the job.

Compensation

The pay rate for this position is $20.82 per hour.
