Role Overview
City & State is looking for a passionate and driven early-career journalist to join its award-winning City Hall team. This full-time remote position offers the opportunity to cover New York City politics while compiling the flagship First Read newsletter each morning. The ideal candidate is eager to break news quickly and craft insightful magazine stories about the City Council, the Mayor's office, and the political figures shaping New York's governance.
Key Responsibilities
- Assemble the First Read newsletter daily from 4:30 a.m. to 6 a.m.
- Produce fast-paced news stories on the activities of the NYC Council, mayoral administration, and elections.
- Pitch and write 1 to 2 detailed magazine articles monthly focused on city political and policy matters.
Qualifications
- Strong curiosity about New York City's political environment.
- Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail in fact-checking.
- A committed approach to high-quality journalism and writing craft.
- Preferred: 1 to 2 years of political reporting experience within New York City.
- Must reside in the New York City area.

Compensation
The salary range for this position is $66,500 to $72,000 annually.
