Job description

Company Overview

AYR Wellness is a major U.S. multi-state cannabis operator with roughly $500 million in annual revenue and more than 90 licensed retail stores across Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Nevada, Virginia, Delaware, and Massachusetts. The company grows, manufactures, and sells a wide range of cannabis products for both medical patients and adult-use customers.

Following a successful recapitalization and debt restructuring, the organization is rebuilding its operating model across the business. It is seeking hands-on leaders who can help define the next phase of growth and contribute to a company that is positioned for long-term success in a fast-changing, highly regulated industry.

Role Summary

The Chief Financial Officer will be a key executive partner to the CEO and a core member of the leadership team. This person will own the company’s financial health, the reliability of reporting, and the strategic direction of the finance function while helping raise the quality of analysis and decision support across all markets.

With a strengthened balance sheet, reduced leverage, and new capital from owners with cannabis expertise, the business is entering a growth phase. The right leader will do more than oversee finance; they will actively shape it, modernize workflows, develop the team, and use AI and better processes to improve performance across the enterprise.

Leadership and Team Development

  • Develop and invest in the existing finance and accounting team, including using AI to improve roles and capabilities within Finance.
  • Create career pathways, strengthen team capacity where needed, and foster an environment where people can perform well and be recognized for their contributions.
  • Build on current strengths while elevating the function’s overall effectiveness and culture.

FP&A and Business Partnership

  • Lead the operating model, budgeting, forecasting, and scenario planning processes.
  • Turn financial results into clear, decision-ready insights for the CEO and board.
  • Work closely with the CEO on strategy, capital allocation, and EBITDA improvement efforts, including pricing, mix, SG&A, COGS, and labor.

Treasury and Capital Strategy

  • Guide capital strategy by continuously evaluating the company’s capital structure and financing options to improve efficiency and reduce the burden of debt.
  • Own cash planning, liquidity oversight, and working capital management.
  • Track debt covenants and manage communications with lenders, private equity stakeholders, and the board.
  • Represent the company professionally in external financial discussions.

M&A and Business Unit Evaluation

  • Lead financial due diligence and provide finance recommendations on whether to proceed with potential M&A opportunities.
  • Work with Operations to review the financial performance of each business unit and state, identifying opportunities for improvement or possible divestiture.

Financial Operations and Reporting

  • Own monthly close, consolidation, and recurring reporting processes.
  • Provide accurate KPI dashboards and variance analysis on a dependable schedule.
  • Oversee external audits, tax compliance filings, and internal control execution.
  • Set and enforce financial policies and accounting standards across all entities.

Compliance, Tax, and Controls

  • Manage 280E considerations, multi-state tax obligations, and regulatory reporting with discipline and precision.
  • Maintain SOX-light internal controls across all markets.
  • Partner with Legal, Operations, and People Ops on risks related to inventory, payroll, benefits, and regulatory exposure.

Systems and Infrastructure

  • Use AI, automation, and business intelligence tools to redesign how Finance operates and delivers insight for a growing multi-state business.

Qualifications

  • At least 15 years of senior finance and accounting leadership experience, including substantial time serving as a CFO with full accountability for both finance and accounting.
  • Experience in multi-entity, multi-market operations within a highly regulated industry.
  • Proven ability to strengthen a finance and accounting organization by improving systems, tightening controls, and building team capability while preserving continuity, including use of AI in Finance.
  • Experience working in or closely with a private equity-backed business is a strong advantage, along with the ability to present concise, decision-oriented materials to the CEO, board, and lenders.
  • Demonstrated success managing banking relationships, capital structure, and working capital in a complex environment.
  • Deep expertise in FP&A, accounting, treasury, and controls.
  • Experience with lenders and private equity sponsors, covenant management, and investor-quality reporting; comfortable leading audits and complex transactions.
  • Strong operator mindset with a data-driven, practical approach and the ability to collaborate on cost, throughput, and working capital improvements.
  • Strong systems fluency and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and change management abilities, with a track record of building teams and culture.
  • Background in cannabis, CPG, or another highly regulated sector is strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting is required; CPA and/or MBA is strongly preferred.
