Job description

Role overview

The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE), headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, is seeking a Chief Financial Officer to join its senior leadership team. ACTE is the largest national education association focused on advancing learning that prepares both youth and adults for careers. Established in 1926, the organization is marking its 100th anniversary and is in a period of strong growth, with 30 staff members currently and plans to add five more in the coming year. It reported more than $10.9 million in revenue in 2025, has surpassed 30,000 members, and holds $14 million in cash reserves.

ACTE has a mission-centered, highly collaborative culture with strong retention, including employees with more than 20 years of service. The association operates from a headquarters building it owns, which also includes three outside tenants. The CFO will report directly to the Executive Director and will act as a key strategic partner to the Board of Directors and senior leadership.

What the role involves

This is a hands-on leadership role that combines strategic oversight with day-to-day execution. The CFO will be responsible for the financial, human resources, and operations functions of the association. The position requires close coordination across departments, support for a growing organization, and the ability to strengthen existing processes while contributing financial expertise to long-term planning.

The role also includes supervision of a relatively new internal team and an outsourced Controller, along with responsibility for financial systems, operational controls, and support for the Board and Audit Committee.

Key responsibilities

The CFO will guide budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, human resources, facilities, contracts, technology, and internal control systems. The position will also oversee compliance, audit preparedness, and the accuracy of reporting, while helping improve integrations between the iMIS database and Sage Intacct accounting platform.

In addition, the CFO will translate complex financial information for staff, members, board members, and other stakeholders, while ensuring smooth financial and operational support for ACTE’s continued growth. The role includes leadership of a geographically distributed internal team and an outsourced Controller, with an emphasis on collaboration, accountability, and operational continuity.

Candidate profile

The ideal candidate will bring a bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience, a CPA designation, and more than 10 years of managerial accounting experience. Strong familiarity with GAAP, government grants, nonprofit or association finance, and financial systems such as Sage Intacct and iMIS EMS is expected.

ACTE is looking for someone ethical, detail-oriented, collaborative, and future-focused, with solid supervisory ability, communication skills, problem-solving capability, and time management discipline.

Compensation and benefits

The annual salary range is capped at $180,000 to $200,000, depending on experience. ACTE also offers a comprehensive benefits package and an annual bonus opportunity of up to 5% based on individual and organizational performance. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

Application details

Recruitment is being handled by The Moran Company. Applicants are asked to submit a cover letter and resume through the secure online portal.
