Job description

Company overview

The Irish Judo Association (IJA), which serves as the national governing body for judo across the island of Ireland, is looking for a highly capable leader to take on the role of Chief Executive Officer. This is a unique chance to help guide the direction of one of Ireland’s Olympic sports.

In this position, you will work in close partnership with the Board, clubs, volunteers, athletes, coaches, and other important stakeholders to steer the organisation through an ambitious phase of expansion, development, and high-performance progress.

Role summary

Reporting to the President and Board of Directors, the CEO will be responsible for setting strategic direction and overseeing day-to-day operations across the association. The role will focus on turning the organisation’s vision and strategic goals into practical delivery.

Key focus areas

  • Lead the execution of the IJA strategic plan and ensure progress against agreed objectives.
  • Support growth in club participation and wider engagement across Ireland.
  • Develop strong working relationships with Sport Ireland, clubs, athletes, volunteers, and external partners.
  • Maintain effective governance, sound financial control, and efficient organisational performance.
  • Expand commercial relationships, sponsorship opportunities, and alternative income streams.
  • Contribute to the creation and delivery of long-term high-performance pathways.
  • Increase the visibility and reputation of Irish judo both nationally and abroad.

Candidate profile

The ideal applicant will bring a third-level qualification at Level 8 or equivalent in Business, Management, Sport Management, or a related area, or will have substantial leadership experience that is directly relevant.

You should also have at least five years’ experience in a senior leadership or executive management position, together with experience in a sporting, not-for-profit, membership-led, or otherwise complex organisation.

Additional requirements

  • Strong background in financial oversight, governance, and strategic planning.
  • Excellent ability to communicate, engage stakeholders, and build productive relationships.
  • Experience obtaining and managing funding, sponsorship, grants, or commercial partnerships.
  • Demonstrated success in leading organisational growth, transformation, and change.
  • Capability to inspire and coordinate staff, volunteers, and wider stakeholders around shared goals.
  • Fluent English is required.

Preferred experience

  • Previous exposure to a National Governing Body or a high-performance sporting environment.
  • Familiarity with Sport Ireland governance and funding expectations.
  • Knowledge of athlete development pathways and performance structures.
