Job description
About the Role
We are looking for an imaginative and analytical Character Behavior Designer to craft how AI-powered characters, digital humans, and virtual personas behave and interact in various environments and situations. The successful applicant will translate character concepts and personality frameworks into detailed behavioral systems that ensure synthetic characters feel coherent, believable, responsive, and engaging.
This multidisciplinary position merges behavioral design, psychology, storytelling, interaction design, and artificial intelligence. You will collaborate closely with AI developers, character designers, writers, performance experts, and interaction teams to create frameworks guiding character reactions to users, events, emotions, relationships, and dynamic situations.
Key Responsibilities
- Create behavioral frameworks for AI-driven characters, digital humans, and interactive virtual personas.
- Specify character responses across social, emotional, environmental, and conversational contexts.
- Translate personalities, motivations, and backstories into tangible behaviors and interaction patterns.
- Design the decision-making logic that governs characters' choice of responses or actions.
- Set behavioral rules, tendencies, boundaries, and response priorities for each character.
- Develop emotional response systems managing reactions to positive, negative, unexpected, or stressful scenarios.
- Devise relationship behaviors, including trust, cooperation, conflict, and emotional distance.
- Create behavioral patterns adapted for different interaction contexts, audiences, and environments.
- Ensure characters adapt behavior while maintaining consistent identity.
- Develop scenarios and behavioral test cases to assess character responses over a wide variety of situations.
- Coordinate with writers and dialogue designers to align dialogue and actions with intended character behavior.
- Collaborate with AI engineers to convert behavioral models into prompts, system instructions, policies, decision logic, or AI implementation frameworks.
- Analyze AI-generated interactions to detect inconsistencies, unnatural responses, repetitive behaviors, or character deviations.
- Design edge cases and difficult scenarios to test character behavior resilience.
- Produce detailed behavioral documentation including decision trees, interaction guidelines, and response specifications.
- Support teams in motion, voice, animation, and performance by defining behavioral intent behind physical and verbal cues.
- Analyze user interactions and feedback to improve character realism, responsiveness, and engagement.
- Research innovations in behavioral AI, autonomous agents, digital humans, interactive characters, and synthetic media.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Psychology, Behavioral Science, Interaction Design, Game Design, Performing Arts, Creative Writing, Human-Computer Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, Communication, or related fields.
- 3 to 5 years experience in behavioral design, character development, game design, interactive media, conversational AI, digital humans, animation, performance design, or related disciplines.
- Deep understanding of human behavior, emotional processing, social dynamics, and decision-making mechanisms.
- Proven skill in designing believable behaviors for fictional, digital, or interactive characters.
- Strong grasp of how personality, motivation, emotion, and context influence observable behavior.
- Capability to develop structured behavioral systems beyond narrative descriptions.
- Experience crafting scenarios, decision trees, behavioral rules, and interaction models.
- Familiarity with generative AI, conversational AI, large language models, or AI-based character systems.
- Ability to collaborate with technical staff and translate creative concepts into precise specifications.
- Keen analytical and observational skills for identifying subtle behavior inconsistencies.
- Demonstrated ability to design character behavior across multiple emotional and interaction contexts.
- Knowledge of dialogue, body language, facial expression, gesture, or performance is a plus.
- Strong communication, documentation, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Balanced approach to align believable behaviors with technical constraints, UX needs, and character consistency.
- Fluency in English, with additional languages considered advantageous.
- Portfolio showcasing character behavior design, interactive characters, game characters, digital humans, conversational experiences, behavioral systems, or related projects is highly preferred.
What We Offer
- Chance to shape behavior for cutting-edge AI characters and digital humans.
- Multidisciplinary team environment combining AI engineers, designers, writers, performers, animators, and interaction specialists.
- Creative control over character behavior, interaction logic, and response design.
- Access to emerging AI, digital human, conversational, and interactive character technologies.
- Opportunities to engage in entertainment, education, cultural, immersive, and interactive technology projects.
- Professional growth in behavioral AI and synthetic character domains.
- Collaborative setting where psychology, storytelling, performance, and AI converge.
