Role Overview
The Control Room Desk Operator oversees the round-the-clock supervision, control, and coordination of plant activities from the control room of a combined cycle power station. The position is focused on maintaining reliable and efficient generation while following grid dispatch directions and obligations under the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The operator works with cross-functional teams to keep operations safe, stable, and compliant.
Core Duties
- Track the performance of generation systems continuously, including gas turbines, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), and related auxiliary systems, as well as high-voltage electrical operations.
- Use and fine-tune control systems to keep the plant running within set operating limits and efficiency goals.
- Receive dispatch instructions from the Load Dispatch Centre (LDC), coordinate their execution, and ensure actions are carried out on time.
- Adjust output levels based on live demand while staying aligned with the PPA terms.
- Record operating parameters, performance figures, and generation data accurately.
- Prepare and issue reports on plant performance, operational events, and regulatory compliance.
- Follow safety procedures and work practices to support a safe environment for everyone on site.
- Take part in safety drills, audits, and training sessions, and escalate hazards or incidents to the supervisor.
- Assist the Shift Charge Engineer with isolations and permit-to-work (PTW) preparation.
- Serve as a member of the emergency response team.
- Work with technical personnel and field operators to identify, analyze, and resolve operational issues.
- Recommend and apply corrective steps to reduce downtime and improve reliability.
- Coordinate closely with maintenance, engineering, and operations teams to support overall plant performance.
- Guide and train junior operators and newly joined staff when needed.
- Ensure adherence to environmental regulations, safety standards, and operating procedures.
- Participate in inspections and reviews to help maintain industry compliance.
Qualifications and Experience
A Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma is required, preferably in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
The role calls for at least 5 years of total professional experience, including more than 3 years as a CCR Operator in the operations and maintenance of combined cycle power plants. Experience with Siemens gas turbine-based CCGT plants is preferred.
Technical and Language Requirements
A strong understanding of combined cycle power generation is important, along with awareness of regulatory requirements and contractual commitments under a PPA. Solid familiarity with Distributed Control Systems (DCS) is expected. English fluency is essential, and Arabic knowledge is an added advantage.
Working Conditions
This is a shift-based role that includes nights, weekends, and holidays depending on operational requirements. The work is mainly carried out in a control room setting, with occasional visits to plant facilities. The role also requires the ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment and respond calmly to emergencies.
