Job description

Role overview

This position is for a casual lifeguard team member at Lloyd Elsmore Park Pool and Leisure Centre in East Auckland. The role is designed to help keep aquatic spaces safe and well run, with a strong focus on customer care, vigilance, and calm decision-making.

What the role involves

  • Maintaining a secure pool environment through active supervision and helpful interaction with visitors.
  • Explaining and upholding pool rules to customers.
  • Responding promptly to first aid situations when they arise.
  • Keeping the pool area and nearby spaces clean and tidy.
  • Supporting administrative tasks when required.
  • Stepping in to cover occasional shifts for Customer Support and Fitness teams as needed.

Working pattern and training

This is a flexible casual position scheduled across a 7-day roster, so availability across multiple days is important. Training will be provided, and successful applicants must be able to attend training from 6 July 2026 to 17 July 2026, Monday to Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The training venue will be confirmed later.

What you need to bring

Applicants should be strong swimmers who are comfortable working with people and making safe, responsible decisions. A current Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC) is preferred, but training support may be available to help suitable candidates gain it. A First Aid certificate is also required to become a lifeguard in this setting, and the organisation will provide the necessary training at no cost for the right candidate.

Swim test requirements

To be considered, candidates must be confident they can complete the following swimming test:

  • Swim 200 metres in under 6 minutes.
  • Swim 25 metres sidestroke.
  • Swim 50 metres breaststroke.
  • Retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool.
  • Tread water for 5 minutes.

Skills and experience

The role calls for strong administration and communication ability, excellent customer service, maturity, and reliability. It is suitable for people of different ages who can work several days and adapt to varied centre needs.

Growth and workplace culture

Auckland Council offers opportunities to expand your skills and move into other centre roles such as Learn to Swim Instructor, Fitness Instructor, or Recreation Assistant. The organisation describes itself as supportive and dynamic, with a focus on wellbeing, flexibility, continuous improvement, and an inclusive culture that values diversity, equity, and belonging.

Additional information

This is a children's worker role under the Vulnerable Children Act 2014, so police vetting is required before starting work. The position is also safety sensitive and will involve pre-employment checks. The official role title is Team Member, and the position is graded Band C.

Equal opportunity statement

Auckland Council states that it is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applicants with support or access needs during the recruitment process.

Application deadline

Applications close on 17 June 2026.
