About the Role

School District 72 is seeking a permanent Carpenter to support maintenance and repair work across its schools and facilities. This position reports to the Director of Operations and the Carpenter Team Lead and is part of a team that helps keep the district’s buildings safe, functional, and well maintained.

The district operates across a wide region of Campbell River, Quadra Island, Sayward, Cortes, Bute Inlet, and surrounding areas. Its schools and board office are situated on the traditional territories of the Liǧʷiɫdaxʷ people, and the district also acknowledges the traditional territories of the Klahoose, K'ómoks, and χʷɛmaɬkʷu First Nations.

Pay rate: $38.97 per hour

What You Will Do

This role covers a broad range of carpentry tasks in institutional settings, including interior and exterior construction, renovations, concrete work, envelope repairs, and other maintenance-related assignments.

  • Carry out a full range of carpentry duties as needed.
  • Work closely with other staff to support a collaborative approach to school operations and maintenance.
  • Follow spoken and written instructions and work according to established procedures.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Support other trades staff and complete general labour or maintenance tasks when required.
  • Use relevant computer tools, including maintenance management systems and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, equipment, and materials safely; clean and store them properly after use.
  • Respond to emergencies when needed.
  • Take on additional duties as assigned.

What We Are Looking For

The district is looking for someone with proven carpentry experience, strong practical skills, and the ability to work safely and independently in an institutional environment.

  • Valid B.C. TQ and/or interprovincial carpenter trade qualification.
  • At least 2 years of recent full-time equivalent experience, or about 3,500 hours, as a journeyman carpenter.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Physical ability to perform all maintenance and repair duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Solid understanding of carpentry procedures and equipment.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with school administrators, parents, staff, and students.
  • Comfort working at heights, including on ladders or scaffolds.
  • Ability to work while using personal protective equipment.
  • Good personal organization and self-management skills.
  • Own tools as required for the job.
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 driver’s licence at minimum.
