Program Overview
The Australian Government Career Starter Program is a structured 12-month initiative designed to launch your career within government agencies. Participants work full-time in a permanent APS1 position while earning a competitive salary along with paid leave and superannuation benefits. The program offers practical, on-the-job experience across various governmental departments and agencies, helping build valuable skills for future career advancement.
Program Benefits

Eligible Applicants
- Successful completion of Year 12 or an equivalent qualification either this year or the previous year.
- Australian citizenship is mandatory.
- Willingness to undertake security and police clearance processes.
Single Application, Multiple Role Streams
Applicants submit one application and may be considered for either of two work streams, aligned with their preferences and abilities:
- General Government Roles
- Human Resources Roles
Government Roles
This generalist track features responsibilities across areas such as customer service, program and policy support, and technical assistance including IT infrastructure tasks. Specific duties may encompass responding to public inquiries, managing administrative and executive support tasks, handling IT and supplier communications, and more. Participants complete a Certificate IV in Government focused on public sector functions, ethics, and relevant legislation.
Human Resources Roles
In HR roles, participants assist with foundational HR functions such as supporting learning and well-being programs, responding to HR inquiries, facilitating recruitment activities, managing administrative duties, and maintaining corporate records. They earn a Certificate IV in Human Resource Management to deepen their understanding of recruitment, employee performance, and workplace relations.
