Program Overview
The Australian Government Career Starter Program is a 12-month full-time initiative designed to launch your career within government service. Participants secure a permanent APS1-level position, earning a competitive salary with paid leave and superannuation benefits.
Opportunities and Development
Successful applicants will:
- Hold a permanent full-time APS1 role in a government department or agency
- Pursue a Certificate IV in Government or Human Resource Management concurrently with work
- Benefit from dedicated supervision and collaborative team support
- Participate in networking events with fellow Career Starters across governmental bodies
- Have potential advancement to an APS2 level upon program completion
Eligibility Criteria
- Completion of Year 12 or equivalent within the current or previous calendar year
- Australian citizenship
- Successful completion of security and police checks
Application Process and Work Streams
Applicants submit a single application which allows consideration for two distinct work streams:
- General Government Roles
- Human Resources Roles
Placements will be aligned with each candidate's interests and strengths.
Details of Roles
General Government Roles
- Customer Service: Interacting with the public, managing enquiries, and supporting facility operations
- Programs and Policy: Organizing training schedules, handling correspondence, and providing executive support
- Technical Support: Assisting with IT infrastructure management, procurement, and supplier relations
Participants in this stream complete a Certificate IV in Government, which covers public sector operations, ethics, and relevant legislation.
Human Resources Roles
- HR Initiatives: Supporting learning and development, wellbeing programs, and communication of policies
- HR Policy and Procedures: Managing basic enquiries and following established HR processes
- Recruitment and Governance: Assisting interview coordination, supporting committees, and preparing documentation
- Administration: Conducting corporate data entry, managing inboxes, and maintaining records
This pathway leads to obtaining a Certificate IV in Human Resource Management, addressing recruitment, performance management, and employee relations.
