Job description
About the role
The Daily Aus is a major Australian news brand created for younger audiences, focused on explaining important stories—from interest rates to global markets—in a way that is clear, accurate and relevant to everyday life. This position is for a journalist with strong interest in finance, business and technology, a drive to uncover original stories, and the ability to make complicated subjects feel engaging and easy to understand for a young Australian readership.
In this role, you will become the main journalist responsible for the finance, business and tech beat. You will guide the editorial direction for this vertical and shape how stories appear across the newsletter and social channels. Working within the editorial team and closely with the News Editor and Editor-in-Chief, you will help define TDA’s voice on the economic issues that genuinely affect young Australians.
The job will range from covering major announcements such as cash rate decisions and new technology developments to writing deeper newsletter pieces that make topics like superannuation feel timely and meaningful to a 24-year-old audience.
Key responsibilities
- Bring original business and economics story ideas into daily editorial meetings.
- Track breaking developments in finance, business and technology to keep coverage fast, relevant and dependable.
- Own the Finance, Business & Tech beat and steer the editorial plan across newsletter and social output.
- Turn complex economic and financial information into sharp, accessible content suited to different formats, from in-depth explainers to short social posts.
- Deliver high-quality stories that matter to young Australians.
- Develop strong working relationships with important sources such as economists, analysts, founders and policymakers.
- Support teammates and step in where needed across the wider editorial group.
What we are looking for
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism, economics or a similar discipline.
- At least 3 years of relevant professional experience.
- Solid understanding of financial systems and economic policy.
- A strong instinct for finding stories that are not yet widely told but matter to young Australians.
- Excellent writing ability and careful attention to detail.
- Confidence working in a fast-moving environment.
- Comfort using social media and digital publishing platforms.
- Strong commitment to accuracy, integrity and quality journalism.
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues at all levels.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
Why this opportunity stands out
The Daily Aus is a trusted news source for young Australians, reaching more than 2.5 million people every month. Its editorial team helps shape everything the organisation publishes, and this role sits at the centre of that work.
You will have ownership of the Finance, Business & Tech vertical and work with the Editor-in-Chief to influence how young Australians understand the economic forces shaping their lives. The work may involve breaking news about a tech company changing the way Australians work, or explaining rising mortgage rates for people navigating their first home.
If you want a role with real audience reach, clear ownership of a beat and a collaborative editorial environment that cares deeply about storytelling, this position offers that combination.
