Overview

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform professional building inspections across various types of building applications in compliance with approved plans and the New Zealand Building Code.
  • Provide clear and practical advice to applicants, customers, and other stakeholders regarding building legislation and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain detailed records of decisions and justifications aligned with legislative standards and internal quality protocols.
  • Manage documentation related to consents, variations, and ensure accurate time tracking for invoicing purposes.
  • Investigate historic consents, complaints, and building disputes, guiding them through to resolution.
  • Conduct pool barrier inspections and building warrant of fitness audits when required.

Position Options

This vacancy may be filled as either a Building Officer or Senior Building Officer based on candidate expertise. Please specify your preferred role in your application.

Candidate Profile

  • Demonstrated strong technical knowledge of building practices and regulatory compliance frameworks.
  • Qualified or willing to obtain qualification acceptable under Regulation 18.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships.
  • Proficient in documentation, record management, and efficient time management.
  • Positive, solution-oriented mindset capable of thriving under pressure.
  • Possession of a current unrestricted New Zealand driver's licence.
  • Preferably knowledgeable about the Building Act 2004 and authorized to perform rapid building assessments.

Additional Senior Officer Qualifications

  • Advanced technical expertise and extensive experience within building regulatory environments.
  • Experience processing and approving building consents, particularly for Commercial 1 category or higher projects.
  • Proven mentoring and coaching capabilities with technical feedback skills.
  • Experience in investigations and enforcement under the Building Act is advantageous.
