Role Overview

The Indianapolis Zoo is looking for a part-time Browse Gardener to help care for the plants, browse species, and exhibit vegetation that support animal nutrition, habitat quality, enrichment, and guest experiences. This role contributes to the Zoo’s broader mission of protecting nature and encouraging people to care for the environment.

This is a variable part-time position scheduled for 20 to 29 hours per week. Weekend shifts may be needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out routine horticultural work such as planting, watering, weeding, pruning, and mulching.
• Locate, gather, and prepare browse, perching materials, and habitat plants for animal use.
• Check that all browse and plant materials are safe, suitable, and nutritionally appropriate for the species that will receive them.
• Observe plant condition and report signs of pests, disease, or environmental stress.
• Keep detailed records of browse collection, plant transfers, deliveries, and day-to-day tasks.
• Use tools and equipment safely, including chainsaws, trimmers, and other landscape maintenance equipment.
• Help with conservation programs, tours, learning activities, guest engagement, and special events when needed.
• Support general horticulture and grounds maintenance across the Zoo.

Candidate Profile

This role is intended for someone who enjoys outdoor work, has an interest in plants and horticulture, and is comfortable contributing to animal care operations. The position requires the ability to work in indoor and outdoor settings in all weather conditions.

Requirements

• Applicant must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid Indiana driver’s license that can be insured by the Zoo.
• Ability to operate Zoo vehicles is required.
• At least 1 year of experience in horticulture, forestry, or a related area is preferred.
• Prior hands-on work experience is preferred, though college coursework in a relevant field may be accepted in place of experience.
• A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Additional value is given to vocational certification, an associate degree, or a bachelor’s degree in horticulture, forestry, or a related discipline.
• Must be able to work outdoors and indoors in varying temperatures and environmental conditions.
• Must be able to lift and move materials requiring up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently.
• Must be able to climb and descend ladders and steps and work safely on uneven ground while maintaining balance.
• Strong visual accuracy is necessary, along with the ability to communicate and understand information clearly over a two-way radio.
• May involve Category B occupational exposure to human bloodborne pathogens.
• May also involve exposure to hazardous chemicals such as chlorine bleach and cleaning products.
• Compliance with Universal Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens guidelines is required.
