About Brain Tumour Support NZ

Brain Tumour Support NZ is a nationwide organisation dedicated to assisting individuals living with any brain tumour, along with their families and whānau. They aim to diminish fear, isolation, and disempowerment through tailored support and trustworthy information. The services help clients navigate complex medical treatments, neurological impacts, and emotional challenges related to their diagnosis. The organisation fosters community connections, provides resources, and directs people to additional help if needed, striving to empower individuals to live well despite a brain tumour diagnosis.

Role Overview

The Board Trustee position is a part-time, remote role responsible for governance, strategic guidance, and oversight of the organisation's mission and programs. Trustees participate in routine board meetings, evaluate organisational performance, and aid in strategic planning and policy formulation. Responsibilities include preparing for meetings by reviewing documents, contributing insights on budgets and fundraising activities, and ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards. Trustees also serve as representatives and advocates, building stakeholder relations and promoting community partnerships. Collaboration with fellow trustees and staff is essential for effective service delivery and organisation sustainability.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and contribute to regular board meetings.
  • Review organisational performance and reports.
  • Engage in strategic planning and policy development.
  • Prepare for meetings through thorough review of board papers.
  • Provide informed input on budgeting and fundraising strategies.
  • Ensure legal, ethical, and accountability standards are met.
  • Act as an ambassador supporting stakeholder engagement, advocacy, and partnerships.
  • Collaborate effectively with trustees and staff to maintain high-quality services and organisational growth.

Candidate Requirements

  • Demonstrated governance and leadership experience including board duties, strategic planning, and risk oversight.
  • Financial literacy, with ability to understand budgets, financial statements, and nonprofit funding.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, able to represent the organisation externally.
  • Background or knowledge in health, disability, social services, or community support sectors, especially related to serious illness.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices, respecting whānau and diverse communities of Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • Capability to work effectively in a remote setting, manage time efficiently, and uphold confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Preferable but not mandatory: prior governance experience, relevant professional qualifications (law, finance, health, nonprofit management), or personal experience with brain tumours or serious illness.
