Newmont is a global gold producer with additional output in copper, silver, zinc and lead. Its portfolio spans Africa, Australia, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, and Papua New Guinea. The company is listed on the S&P 500 and is known for strong environmental, social and governance practices, rigorous safety standards, solid execution, and technical expertise. Founded in 1921, Newmont has been publicly traded since 1925.

At Newmont, employees are seen as the source of value in the metals the business produces. The company emphasizes belonging, growth, inclusion, and respect, and its Africa operations include about 5,900 employees and contractors, mainly across the Ahafo North and South mines. The organization offers the kind of opportunity and career satisfaction expected from a large global employer.

Primary purpose

The role focuses on carrying out technical blasting support by charging blastholes safely and under control.

Blast execution planning

  • Receive instructions from the Blasting Supervisor and carry out work according to the approved charging plan.
  • Measure blast-hole depth in the field and enter the details into Dip-Plus to calculate the needed bulk explosive type and quantity.
  • Check and reconcile initiation product quantities before the Supervisor gives final approval.
  • Carry out pre-blast checks on applicable systems when electronic detonation is being used.
  • Prime all blast holes before charging.
  • Set up physical control measures such as barricade cones and colour signage before blasting begins.

Blast execution

  • Inspect drill holes and complete any corrective work needed before charging starts.
  • Build primer charges using detonators, fuses, detonating cords, and related materials.
  • Load explosives manually into blast holes or oversee bulk explosive trucks as they charge the blast pattern.
  • Connect electrical wires, detonating cords, or fuses to primers or series, and link the series to blasting machines.
  • Attach surface connectors to downlines.
  • Complete tie-up work in line with standard task procedures.
  • Carry out final checks to confirm all blasting links are safe and correctly connected.
  • Maintain quality assurance and quality control standards throughout blasting operations.
  • Handle, store, and move explosives and accessories in strict compliance with safety rules and Newmont procedures.
  • Keep accurate inventory records for explosives.
  • Document blasting work using the required templates and submit the records to the Supervisor.

General execution

  • Organize and prioritize daily work independently.
  • Use instructions and diagrams to arrange explosives according to the tie-up plan.
  • Collect required tools and consumables from the Supervisor.
  • Make sure all work in progress meets the relevant specifications, codes, and regulations.
  • Help deliver blasting targets.
  • Join toolbox talks and safety meetings regularly.
  • Take part in additional training to build skills.
  • Share end-of-day updates with the Supervisor on completed tasks.

Stakeholder coordination

  • Work with Stemming Loader Operators to begin stemming activities.
  • Support Shot Firers during tie-up connections.
  • Coordinate with the Shot Firer to confirm blasting may proceed.

Health and safety

  • Set up pit entry controls, including blasting-in-progress signs and barricade cones, and keep roadblocks in place before and after blasting.
  • Confirm that marked blast zones are secure and safe.
  • Perform the final safety check of the blast area and clear personnel from the zone before firing.
  • Inspect work areas to ensure compliance with internal Newmont standards and external regulations.
  • Follow approved safe-blasting procedures at all times.
  • Keep safety as the highest priority throughout the job.
  • Assist co-workers on operational tasks to help maintain safe work practices.
  • Attend daily pre-shift safety meetings.

Applicants should have 1 to 5 years of blasting experience in a large open-pit mining environment, including experience with both electronic and non-electronic detonation methods.

Successful candidates need strong risk awareness, safety discipline, numeracy, active listening, concentration, planning, organization, prioritization, analytical thinking, problem solving, written and verbal communication, interpersonal ability, information monitoring, and the ability to follow hazardous-material procedures, verbal instructions, and hand signals while staying focused.
