Position Summary

The Biologist will work under the guidance of a Research Scientist focusing on applied research in biodiversity, wetland ecology, and related conservation science fields supporting DUC’s mission and the Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research (IWWR). This role aids in research analysis, publication, and dissemination of findings, while also supporting various DUC teams including Conservation, Education, Fundraising, Policy, and Communications. The position is primarily office-based with potential fieldwork and offers a one-year term contract.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct research related to biodiversity, wetland ecology, and conservation science, incorporating both office and field work that may include data collection, equipment management, coordinating field activities, and overseeing project personnel such as students and volunteers.
• Manage, analyze, and archive ecological and spatial data effectively.
• Contribute to the preparation and publication of scientific manuscripts and technical reports.
• Collaborate with internal teams, external researchers, conservationists, landowners, and governmental bodies to advance DUC’s conservation goals.
• Provide scientific and technical expertise supporting DUC’s conservation projects and initiatives.
• Develop and present science communication materials, including presentations, articles, videos, and educational content to share research outcomes and promote conservation objectives.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in ecology, wildlife biology, environmental science, or related discipline.
• Minimum three years of relevant professional experience in ecology, wildlife biology, environmental science, or conservation fields.
• Proficiency in ArcGIS or similar GIS software.
• Hands-on experience with field research or ecological monitoring including project coordination, data gathering, and managing multiple priorities in diverse outdoor conditions.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proven ability to work cooperatively in multidisciplinary team settings.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in relevant scientific discipline.
• Experience with ecological data management, statistical analysis, modeling, and visualization using tools such as R.
• A record of contributing to scientific papers, reports, and outreach communication materials.
• Experience working within collaborative multi-investigator research teams.
• Supervisory experience with field teams, technicians, students, or volunteers.
• Proficiency in English and French.

Compensation and Benefits

• Starting salary of $54,300 annually based on a 35-hour work week, commensurate with education and relevant experience.
