Job description
Overview
Join the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) as a Biological Science Technician specializing in wildlife management. This role involves applying wildlife damage control techniques to safeguard agriculture, natural resources, property, and public health.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and execute direct wildlife damage control activities within assigned geographic or technical areas.
- Conduct inspections and surveys to assess wildlife damage and revise management programs accordingly.
- Employ various methods and tools for wildlife control, including firearm use, traps, snares, and chemical treatments such as immobilization and euthanasia drugs when necessary.
- Advise cooperators and the public on suitable wildlife damage management strategies based on thorough knowledge and independent assessment.
- Understand and apply relevant legal frameworks such as the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and Federal Air Regulations.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all specified qualifications by the closing date. For the GS-07 level, candidates need:
- One year of specialized experience at the GS-06 level involving wildlife damage assessments, population surveys, knowledge of wildlife protection laws, and collaboration with external partners on wildlife management; OR
- Completion of one year of graduate education (18 semester hours) in wildlife-related studies; OR
- A combination of education and experience totaling 100% of qualifying criteria.
Applicants may include paid or unpaid experiences, including volunteer service. Transcripts are required if qualifying based on education or combination of education and experience.
