Job description
Role overview
A biochemistry or molecular biology professional is needed to support a DNA production and protein expression laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The position sits within a biotherapeutic expression and purification team that contributes to non-GMP transient protein lead production for research and pre-clinical needs across a broad discovery portfolio. This is a two-year contract role in a fast-paced, collaborative scientific environment.
What you will do
- Run high-throughput plasmid DNA production processes independently, including bacterial growth, plasmid isolation, and sample processing.
- Work with automated laboratory systems such as Biotage, Opentrons, and similar liquid-handling equipment, including basic troubleshooting.
- Carry out DNA quality checks through gel electrophoresis, nucleic acid measurement, purity analysis, and endotoxin testing.
- Prepare samples for next-generation sequencing and assist with initial review of sequencing outputs.
- Oversee plasmid inventory, storage, and sample traceability in electronic systems.
- Keep laboratory documentation accurate and current in an electronic lab notebook.
- Coordinate with expression and purification teams so DNA is delivered on time for downstream work.
- Help improve workflows to increase throughput, consistency, and turnaround time.
- Share status updates, priorities, and any risks to keep production schedules on track.
Skills and experience needed
- Strong hands-on background in molecular biology methods, especially plasmid prep, nucleic acid purification, and DNA quantification.
- Experience with bacterial culture systems.
- Working knowledge of DNA QC techniques and sequencing sample preparation.
- Comfort with automated or semi-automated lab instruments.
- Ability to stay organized while handling multiple tasks in a high-volume setting.
- Experience using electronic lab notebooks and sample tracking tools.
- Careful attention to detail for repetitive laboratory work.
- Clear communication and strong team collaboration skills.
- Commitment to laboratory safety and compliance.
Preferred background
- Exposure to NGS library preparation or sequencing workflows.
- Familiarity with Python for analysis or workflow automation.
- Experience working with plate-based high-throughput formats such as 96-well or 384-well systems.
- Prior use of LIMS or sample management platforms such as FreezerPro or Genedata.
Education
A bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or another related life sciences field is required.
