Job description
About the Role
Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a General Porter to join its busy Portering Services team. Porters play a key part in keeping the hospital running smoothly by helping move patients, equipment, post, and other essential items across the site.
The hospital has more than 25 wards and over 60 clinics, and this role supports the safe and efficient movement of people and resources throughout those areas. Depending on the successful candidate’s skills and fit, the position may involve working on a full 24/7 rota or supporting the radiology transfer team.
Portering is an important part of the Trust’s caring approach and helps support patient care across the hospital 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
What the Role Involves
This is a varied and sometimes physically demanding position. It requires strong organisation, teamwork, confidence, and clear communication.
Duties may include transporting patients around the hospital using wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds; moving equipment and furniture; collecting and delivering post; managing medical gases; cleaning portering equipment; and moving deceased patients from wards where required.
Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed to support service delivery and patient care.
Working Pattern
The successful candidate will be expected to work across the full 24-hour period, including weekends and bank holidays. An initial structured rota will be put in place, although this may change depending on service requirements.
Equal Opportunities and Recruitment Information
The Trust welcomes applications from all sections of the community and is committed to equal opportunities. It also encourages applicants from protected groups, particularly people from BAME, disabled, and LGBTQ+ backgrounds, who are currently underrepresented within the hospitals.
The organisation is actively developing as part of University Hospitals of Northamptonshire, working alongside Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to improve efficiency, modernise services, and support staff to reach their full potential.
Applicants are advised to submit their application promptly, as the vacancy may close early once enough suitable applications have been received.
Candidates are asked to use AI tools sparingly in their application materials and to ensure responses genuinely reflect their own experience, skills, and knowledge.
