Job description

Role Summary

The AV Technician II position at Mystic Aquarium within the Technology department provides vital support for exhibits, live shows, and special events by expertly operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting audiovisual equipment. Reporting directly to the AV Manager, the role requires independent handling of AV systems following established setups to ensure smooth functioning of daily programming and organizational activities. Additionally, this role assists staff with teleconferencing and presentation technology to enhance overall guest and employee experiences.

Key Duties

  • Operate AV equipment during various aquarium programs including live shows like the Marine Theater Sea Lion Show.
  • Execute lighting cues and show-control processes as scheduled.
  • Provide technical assistance for AV, teleconferencing, and presentations to staff across multiple departments.
  • Quickly address and resolve AV issues during live events to minimize guest disruptions.
  • Set up, dismantle, maintain, and repair AV equipment used in exhibits and special events.
  • Troubleshoot AV equipment problems, escalating complicated matters to the AV Manager when necessary.
  • Maintain proficiency with Mac and PC systems that support AV operations.
  • Participate in evaluating and designing AV systems for exhibits and live presentations.
  • Recommend and specify AV equipment for purchase aligned with budget management under supervision.
  • Create lighting designs and cues supporting new or revised exhibits and theater programming for approval.
  • Assist in AV project planning, deployment, and equipment research as directed.
  • Collaborate closely with Exhibits and other departments to coordinate AV installations and project needs.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to AV-related emergencies.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and correctly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE).

Qualifications and Skills

  • A degree or certification in audiovisual technology or a comparable field, or a minimum of three years equivalent professional experience.
  • Solid understanding of both Mac and PC platforms and familiarity with lighting, show-control, and teleconferencing systems.
  • Proven experience in installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing AV gear in demanding live production contexts.
  • Strong communication skills with an ability to foster positive collaboration among diverse teams.
  • Demonstrates an enthusiastic, guest-focused approach with a preparedness to go beyond expectations.
  • Multilingual abilities are beneficial, especially Spanish language skills.
  • Flexible work availability including weekdays, evenings, and weekends to support events and live shows.

Physical Requirements

This physically active role involves working on the aquarium floor and technical areas under varying environmental conditions including indoors, backstage, and near marine habitats where surfaces may be slippery. Candidates must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and perform tasks that involve bending, reaching, climbing, and maintaining stamina during busy live events.
