Job description
Position Overview
The Associate University Librarian for Public Services (AUL:PS) is tasked with overseeing library services and operations aligning with the Library's mission and objectives. Reporting to the University Librarian, the AUL:PS is instrumental in developing, executing, and reviewing library services and plays a key role in library-wide planning, decision-making, and policy formulation. This role encompasses management of services including information literacy program development, reference and instruction, access services, promotion and outreach of library resources, and scholarly communication. Collaboration with the AUL for Technology and Technical Services ensures integrated, high-quality library services for the American University of Sharjah community.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a team of public services librarians and staff while innovating new tools and resources to fulfill the library's strategic goals.
- Oversee the administration of information literacy and instructional services, collection development, circulation, reserves, learning assessment, outreach, and liaison work.
- Plan, implement, and continuously improve essential public services offered by the library.
- Manage the recruitment, training, and supervision of Public Services librarians and staff members.
- Engage in library space planning and facilities management to maintain welcoming and accessible environments.
- Participate in various library and campus committees, acting on behalf of the University Librarian as needed.
- Build and sustain strong networks and partnerships regionally and internationally to promote best practices in the field.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent credential.
Skills and Experience
- At least five years of increasingly responsible, recent experience in an academic library setting.
- Proven leadership abilities including policy formulation and implementation, personnel management, and staff development.
- Strong verbal and written communication along with effective presentation skills.
- Good understanding of current trends in higher education and the challenges faced by academic libraries.
- A strong focus on delivering excellent customer service.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
- Dedication to continuous professional development for self and colleagues.
- Competency in MS Word, MS Excel, indexing and abstracting databases, Current Research Information Systems, and presentation or data visualization tools.
