Job description
Role Overview
This position sits within the Singapore equities research function of Manulife’s investment team. The role is centered on the Singapore market and calls for a researcher who can evaluate companies and sectors using both financial and qualitative lenses, then translate those insights into investment recommendations for the portfolio team.
The work includes detailed analysis of company fundamentals, construction and maintenance of earnings models, and bottom-up company research to support investment decision-making.
Investment Approach
You will be expected to work in line with the investment philosophy and process used by the Singapore Investment Centre, while also maintaining a solid understanding of Manulife Investment Management’s broader approach. Adherence to these principles is required throughout the research and investment process.
Core Responsibilities
- Build and sustain a strong grasp of the investment theory and quantitative methods used by the Singapore Investment Centre.
- Assess qualitative factors that may affect a company’s investment case.
- Perform security analysis using cash flow, balance sheet, profit and loss, and DCF-based valuation work, while also considering ESG factors where relevant.
- Keep up to date with macroeconomic developments, economic and financial trends in assigned markets, and the effect of those trends on sectors and stock models.
- Stay informed on political developments in the assigned universe and understand their potential market impact.
- Initiate research coverage on the Singapore market through in-depth sector and company analysis.
- Prepare clear stock recommendations supported by a defined investment thesis and valuation framework.
- Plan and carry out market visits independently where required.
- Produce research reports to the expected standard and within required timelines.
- Summarize outcomes from meetings and conference calls in concise written reports.
- Monitor recommendations and market movements closely to support timely buy or sell calls.
- Contribute to portfolio alpha through consistent, value-adding recommendations.
- Work independently and identify attractive sector or single-stock opportunities.
Requirements
- 1 to 3 years of relevant experience.
- Background in finance or accounting is preferred.
- Previous equity research exposure in the Singapore market will be an advantage.
- Working knowledge of financial information platforms such as Bloomberg is beneficial.
- Experience with financial modeling will be a plus.
