Job description

Role overview

The Saxon State Theatres — comprising the Semperoper Dresden and Staatsschauspiel Dresden — are hiring an Assistant to the Director of the Decoration Workshops starting 01.09.2026. The role is based in Dresden and supports the workshops that supply scenery and stage elements for the theatres’ productions.

The decoration workshops function as a large in-house craft and production unit. Their teams include carpentry, scenic painting, metalwork / armoury, upholstery, and theatrical sculpture, all working together to build stage sets for a wide range of productions.

Key duties

  • Keep the production calendar accurate and up to date, and coordinate the scheduling and preparation of internal and external meetings.
  • Support the preparation of production quotations, create billing documents, and prepare analyses related to budgeting and staffing use.
  • Compile product documentation such as records related to fire performance and quality management, and help coordinate updates to risk assessments and maintenance plans for equipment and machinery.
  • Coordinate and review inventory checks, while continuously maintaining and improving the document filing system, including digital archiving.

Required profile

The employer is looking for someone with an apprenticeship or further training as a Technical Business Specialist (IHK) or an equivalent qualification. You should be able to quickly understand complex technical and operational workflows, and you need solid numerical skills for calculations and evaluations.

Strong command of IT-supported systems and MS Office is essential, especially Outlook, Excel, and Word. Good written and spoken English is also required. The position calls for an independent, well-organised way of working, a strong willingness to learn, and excellent social and communication skills when dealing with different trades.

What is offered

This is a varied role within an internationally renowned institution in Dresden, a culturally and socially diverse capital city. The appointment follows the NV-Bühne (BT) collective agreement. In addition, the package includes annual special payments in June and November, an annual budget for training and professional development, an employer contribution to capital-forming benefits, a subsidised job ticket for Dresden transport / the VVO area or a subsidised Germany ticket, and where possible a free parking space.

Employees also benefit from an in-house canteen operated by the Free State of Saxony, occupational health services, and a central location with excellent transport connections in Dresden’s city centre.

Equal opportunity and application notes

The Saxon State Theatres follow a diversity-focused HR policy and welcome applications from people with a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences. Women and men have equal opportunities, applicants with severe disabilities are given preference if equally qualified, and candidates with a migration background are expressly encouraged to apply.

Applications should be submitted only as a single PDF containing a cover letter, CV, and certificates through the careers portal. E-mail applications cannot be considered. The deadline is Sunday, 05.07.2026. The announcement was published on 09.06.2026 and carries the job reference MPJ-26-06-08-278. Travel and accommodation expenses for interviews will not be reimbursed.
