Job description
About the role
Portabella is a fast-growing men’s fashion retail chain with more than 70 stores throughout the Northeast. The team is hiring an Assistant Shoe Buyer to support the buying function and contribute to everyday merchandising and product decisions.
This is a practical, on-the-job opportunity for someone who is interested in retail, product selection, fashion, and the buying process. The role works closely with the buying team to review sales results, coordinate with vendors, and spot product opportunities across the store network.
It is also a strong growth opportunity for someone aiming to build a long-term career in buying and move toward a Shoe Buyer position over time.
What you will do
- Analyze sales performance by store, style, color, size, and category.
- Monitor top-performing items, slower-moving products, and areas with room for improvement.
- Support purchase order processing, vendor communication, follow-ups, and order status updates.
- Assist with replenishment planning, inter-store transfers, markdown activity, and promotional support.
- Help build assortments tailored to different stores, customer groups, and market needs.
- Visit retail locations to better understand product display, customer demand, and selling patterns.
- Coordinate with vendors, store personnel, and internal teams as needed.
- Keep up with footwear, fashion, pricing, and seasonal market trends.
- Prepare reports and summaries that help guide buying decisions.
What the company is looking for
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Comfort using Excel, reports, and sales data.
- Genuine interest in fashion, footwear, retail, and product merchandising.
- Strong communication and follow-through skills.
- Well organized, dependable, and eager to learn.
- Ability to stay effective in a busy, fast-moving retail setting.
- Retail, footwear, merchandising, or buying exposure is an added advantage.
- Positive mindset and a strong work ethic.
Growth opportunity
This position is designed to create a pathway toward becoming a Shoe Buyer for the right person. A candidate who learns the business, understands the numbers, develops vendor relationships, and contributes to results can grow within the buying department.
Who should apply
Motivated, dependable candidates who are serious about building a career in retail buying and want to develop hands-on experience in the footwear category.
