What this role involves

  • Checks birth and death certificates, along with communicable disease reports, to confirm legal compliance, completeness, and accuracy of medical and other details.
  • Contacts doctors, hospitals, and funeral directors to clear up discrepancies or obtain missing information, then updates records when needed.
  • Approves or denies burial-related permits such as interment, disinterment, and removal permits based on legal requirements.
  • Supports communicable disease case registration and case tracking in line with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Applies geographic and other coding to birth and death records and disease reports.

  • Helps compile information used in reports and summaries.

Compensation and benefits

The posting does not list a salary or stipend amount. Los Angeles County notes that it offers a strong public-sector benefits package, including a range of healthcare options and retirement plans.

Minimum qualifications

To qualify, candidates must have either two years of work experience that involved using information from medical records or medical reports, or an equivalent education substitution.

One year of college credit from an accredited institution may replace one year of the required experience if it includes 30 semester units or 45 quarter units, along with two courses in any of the following areas: human anatomy, physiology, biology, or medical terminology.

Official transcripts are required to prove completed units and courses.

License and physical requirements

A valid California Class C driver license is required, or the ability to use another method of transportation when the job duties require it.

This is a Physical Class II - Light position, meaning the work is administrative and clerical with light physical effort. It may involve occasional lifting up to 10 pounds, bending, stooping, squatting, and substantial walking.

Preferred background

  • Experience providing customer service to the public.
  • Experience helping analyze and interpret data.

Assessment and selection

The examination is a questionnaire-based, scored assessment that counts for 100% of the total score. It measures the required qualifications and the desirable qualifications listed above.

A passing score is 70% or higher. Passing the exam and appearing on the eligible list does not guarantee a job offer.

Applicants who pass are placed on the eligible list for 12 months, and vacancies in the Department of Public Health may be filled from that list as openings arise.

Work schedule

Any shift may be assigned, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

How to apply

Applications are accepted online only. Submissions by mail, fax, or in person are not accepted.

Applicants should complete the form fully and include relevant employment history such as employer name and address, job title, dates of employment, weekly hours, and a description of duties.

Information provided may be checked at any stage of the hiring process, even after appointment. Misrepresentation can lead to rejection or withdrawal of an offer. Copying the requirement language into the work-experience section is not enough to prove eligibility and may result in disqualification.

Document requirements

To receive education credit, applicants must provide a clear copy of official academic documents or email them within 15 days of filing. The document must show the unit count and the unit system used, such as semester or quarter units, and must be in English. If the document is in another language, a translation is required. International degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency and must state the number of units and the unit system. Unofficial documents are not accepted.

An official transcript is one that has the college seal and states “official and/or copy” from the registrar’s office. A web printout from a school portal is not acceptable and may cause the application to be marked incomplete or rejected.

Password-protected files are not accepted and should be unlocked before submission.

Additional information

Applicants may use public library computers in Los Angeles County if they do not have regular access to a computer or the internet.

Applicants must provide a Social Security Number for record control purposes, and federal law requires all employed persons to have one.

Each applicant must submit the application using their own user ID and password. Using someone else’s credentials may overwrite the original application record.

The County of Los Angeles states its commitment to anti-racism, diversity, and inclusion and supports efforts to improve equity in recruitment, selection, and employment.

Contact details listed in the posting include an exam analyst, phone number, email address, and accessibility/teletype support lines. Final appointment depends on verification of U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.

The County is an equal opportunity employer, provides reasonable accommodations for qualified applicants and employees with disabilities, and is a Fair Chance employer that considers eligible applicants with arrest or conviction records in accordance with applicable law.

Career planning resources are available through the County’s Career PathFinder tool. Veteran’s credit may apply in open competitive examinations for qualifying veterans and certain spouses of deceased or disabled veterans, with a 10% credit added to the final passing score under County policy.

The posting also notes that any language in the specific job announcement overrides general employment information. Revised September 2025.
