The First Judicial District Public Defender's Office in Tennessee is seeking a dedicated Assistant Public Defender to join its team serving Carter, Johnson, Unicoi, and Washington counties. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a long-standing tradition of excellence, teamwork, and client-focused advocacy. The vacancy arises following the retirement of a respected senior attorney. Depending on qualifications and experience, the attorney may serve in either General Sessions Court or Criminal Court, aligned to meet the office's needs and support professional growth.

About the Office

The office defends indigent clients across Northeast Tennessee in cases ranging from misdemeanors to severe felonies. It emphasizes ethical, compassionate, and thorough representation, recognizing that achieving lasting justice often involves addressing clients' broader life challenges. The office fosters collaboration among attorneys, legal assistants, an investigator, and a forensic social worker to ensure holistic support, including access to necessary social services such as treatment programs and housing assistance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advocate for clients in General Sessions Court and/or Criminal Court.
  • Handle a varied criminal defense caseload throughout from appointment to disposition or trial.
  • Engage frequently with clients to provide legal counsel and formulate strategies.
  • Conduct in-depth legal research and draft motions, briefs, and pleadings.
  • Negotiate with prosecution and pursue beneficial outcomes for clients.
  • Litigate issues such as suppression motions, evidentiary hearings, and sentencing proceedings.
  • Conduct bench and jury trials as required.
  • Work collaboratively with support staff including legal assistants, investigators, and forensic social workers.
  • Uphold the highest standards of ethics, professionalism, and client service.

Desired Qualifications and Attributes

The office values attorneys who demonstrate strong preparation, critical thinking, sound judgment, and effective communication. Respectful treatment of clients, openness to mentorship, continual self-improvement, teamwork, professionalism, and integrity are highly regarded. The number of years of practice is less important than these core qualities.

The region offers affordable living, excellent schools, abundant outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, cycling, and fishing, along with vibrant community life and proximity to the Appalachian Mountains, making it an attractive place to foster both career and personal life.
