Assistant Public Defender - Felony Division

Position Summary

The Harris County Public Defender's Office is dedicated to delivering exceptional, client-focused legal defense to indigent individuals accused of criminal offenses. The office fosters a collaborative environment among legal and support personnel to vigorously defend constitutional rights and ensure equitable treatment within the justice system.

Role Overview

The Felony Division manages defense for clients charged with a spectrum of felony crimes in Harris County District Courts, ranging from state jail felonies to serious first-degree felonies. Attorneys work in conjunction with investigators, social workers, mitigation experts, and other defense team members to offer thorough and effective advocacy. Caseloads are intentionally capped to uphold quality representation and meaningful client engagement.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide legal representation to individuals charged with felony offenses in Harris County District Courts.
• Handle felony case assignments within established office caseload caps to ensure diligent, client-oriented service from appointment through case resolution.
• Conduct legal research, analyze relevant issues, and craft effective litigation strategies.
• Prepare legal documents including motions, briefs, memoranda, and pleadings.
• Review case discovery, investigate facts, identify defenses, and ready cases for trials.
• Engage regularly with clients to clarify legal choices, discuss case strategies, and offer counsel.
• Maintain ongoing communication with clients, witnesses, law enforcement, and other stakeholders, incorporating routine visits to local detention centers.
• Collaborate closely with support staff such as investigators, social workers, and mitigation specialists for comprehensive case management.
• Participate in strategic case discussions and team staffing meetings.
• Negotiate plea agreements and actively pursue favorable client outcomes.
• Represent clients in court hearings, evidentiary sessions, and jury trials by examining witnesses, presenting evidence, and articulating legal arguments.
• Deliver vigorous, ethical, and client-centered representation throughout the criminal justice process.
• Complete additional related duties as assigned.
