Job description
Role Overview
The Assistant Project Manager supports CBI Construction’s project management and field teams to help ensure that safety, quality, schedule, and budget expectations are met across projects the company builds or manages. This position reports to the Project Manager.
Key Duties
- Analyze drawings and specifications to understand project needs and subcontractor scopes, and prepare takeoffs when required.
- Partner with project management and field operations to build schedules aligned with owner delivery targets, then monitor progress against milestone dates throughout the project.
- Coordinate with preconstruction to preserve the original estimate’s intent and scope during buyout and construction.
- Develop schedules of values for subcontractors, share them with trade partners, and verify receipt.
- Prepare and organize letters of intent, purchase orders, subcontracts, and supporting documents such as RFQ forms, vendor details, W-9s, and certificates of insurance.
- Keep trade partner contact records current as subcontracts and purchase orders are issued.
- Review, approve, and track invoices and pay applications under supervisor direction.
- Support the review, negotiation, and completion of change order requests.
- Help maintain project budgets on a weekly basis.
- Learn and operate all project management software used by the team.
- Complete weekly reporting for project ownership representatives.
- Distribute, review, log, and track submittals, shop drawings, substitution requests, RFIs, and related responses from trade partners, suppliers, consultants, and owner representatives.
- Confirm that project documents reflect all required RFI revisions.
- Maintain digital document logs and records in Procore and share current documents with corporate staff, field teams, and trade partners so everyone works from the latest version.
- Follow the project-management items in CBI’s weekly processes and procedures.
- Help build and manage project action-item lists and drive completion of each item.
- Work with the field team to track materials delivered to the site.
- Coordinate with corporate and field personnel to support company safety, insurance, and OSHA compliance policies.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or a related discipline.
- At least 2 years of professional experience with broad exposure to construction management from preconstruction through closeout, including design and technical understanding.
- Strong knowledge of how design disciplines coordinate and what they require.
- Hands-on familiarity with construction sequencing and stage progression.
- Strong problem-solving ability and comfort developing practical, original solutions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Highly organized, self-driven, enthusiastic, adaptable, and detail-oriented.
- Solid business judgment and professionalism in varied business and social settings.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural and consultant drawings, specifications, and details.
- Team-oriented mindset with the ability to work effectively under deadlines and across all levels of staff.
- Comfort using MS Excel, MS Project, and other construction software such as BlueBeam, Procore, and Primavera P6.
- Responsible handling of company assets.
Additional Requirements
- Must be willing and able to relocate to the project site for the full project duration.
- Schedule may extend beyond a standard 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday pattern depending on project demands and reporting needs.
- Must have the visual ability needed to perform the role effectively.
- Must be physically able to walk active job sites.
- Should demonstrate a strong sense of urgency.
- Must be able to listen carefully and follow directions.
- Ongoing self-improvement and professional development are expected.
