Job description
About sKids
sKids has been creating fun, engaging out-of-school experiences for children across New Zealand since 1996. The organisation now supports more than 3,800 children each day across over 170 school sites and continues to expand. The culture is energetic, playful, and focused on making every day feel different through activities such as art, science, sport, cooking, and games.
Role Overview
As an Assistant Programme Manager, you will be a welcoming presence for children before and after school, helping ensure each session is safe, well organised, and enjoyable. This role requires a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week, scheduled Monday to Friday.
Before-school sessions run from 7:00 am to 8:30 am. After-school sessions run from 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm, and being available from 2:30 pm is essential, although finish times may differ. There may also be additional hours during school holiday programmes between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.
What You Will Do
- Support the Programme Manager with the daily operation of the sKids programme and help keep activities organised and running smoothly.
- Act as the second-in-charge and confidently take the lead when the Programme Manager is unavailable.
- Oversee and interact with larger groups of tamariki while maintaining a secure, welcoming, and enjoyable environment.
- Help plan and run structured activities such as arts and crafts, sport, games, and offsite outings.
- Use positive behaviour guidance approaches to manage challenging behaviour and maintain consistency across the team.
- Support Programme Assistants during shifts, helping ensure expectations are followed and activities stay on track.
- Develop strong, respectful relationships with parents, caregivers, and school staff through clear and friendly communication.
- Assist with setting up, packing down, and preparing resources so each programme session runs without disruption.
Working Pattern
This is a part-time onsite position based in Auckland South (Pukekohe). The role offers weekday work only, with no weekend shifts, and the middle of the day remains free. Morning shifts take place before school, while afternoon shifts are the main requirement.
Perks and Benefits
- 50% off selected sKids programmes, which can be especially useful for your own children.
- Referral bonus of up to $250 for each successful referral.
- Strong work-life balance with no weekend work and free time in the middle of the day.
- Access to an Employee Assistance Programme for wellbeing support.
- A supportive, fun team environment that values collaboration and celebrates achievements.
Eligibility and Requirements
Applicants should have the legal right to work in New Zealand, whether through citizenship or a valid visa. Reliable transport is needed to reach the sKids Tamaoho site. Experience working with children in group settings is important, such as in OSCAR, childcare, coaching, teaching, camps, or similar environments.
Candidates should feel comfortable stepping into a leadership role when necessary, show initiative, and be able to make decisions confidently. Experience handling behaviour in group settings is preferred, along with the ability to stay calm, firm, and supportive. You should also work well in a team, communicate effectively with children and adults, and be over 20 years of age in line with the Social Security (Childcare Assistance) Regulations 2004.
Safeguarding and Selection
sKids is committed to child protection and the safeguarding of children and young people in its care. All successful applicants must pass a satisfactory Police Record Check and must have the right to work in New Zealand. If shortlisted, a friendly team member will contact you regarding the next steps.
