Job description
Position Overview
This full-time, on-site Assistant Principal role in Special Education is based in Grafenwöhr, Bavaria, Germany. The position supports school leadership in an overseas DoDEA setting and involves academic, administrative, and community coordination responsibilities.
Key Duties
- Set educator performance standards for DoDEA staff and carry out teacher evaluations.
- Act as the accountable official for government-owned or leased school property.
- Collect, review, and interpret student achievement and related data to guide school decisions, with a strong focus on school improvement.
- Coordinate communication among school leadership, students, teachers, parents, the local community, and base offices that support the school or its staff.
Education and Experience Requirements
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and meet the stated education and experience standards. Required academic preparation must come from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, or from foreign coursework that has been formally evaluated and accepted under the stated procedures. Official bachelor's and master's transcripts are required, along with EDS and doctorate transcripts if applicable.
Qualifying education pathways include either a master's degree in Educational Administration or Educational Leadership, or a master's degree that includes 30 semester hours of graduate-level coursework, of which at least 20 semester hours are in Educational Administration or Educational Leadership. A valid, unencumbered, fully professional administrator license with comparable certification from a U.S. state board of education or NBPTS may satisfy the Educational Administration/Educational Leadership semester-hour requirement, though all undergraduate and graduate transcripts must still be submitted.
In addition, candidates must have at least three years of successful PK-12 classroom teaching, specialist, or special education experience.
Conditions of Employment
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service.
- U.S. citizenship is mandatory.
- Pay must be processed by direct deposit.
- A two-year trial period may apply.
- Selection is contingent on a suitability and fitness determination following a background investigation.
- A two-year supervisory probationary period may be required.
- The role requires a Tier 3 investigation with Childcare Checks because of contact with children and youth under 18.
- A transportation agreement may need to be signed.
- A mobility agreement is required, including willingness to accept worldwide placement and rotate to any DoDEA location.
- Applicants must meet the requirements of DoD Civilian Personnel Management System rules for employment in foreign areas and return rights.
- CONUS hires and their U.S. citizen family members must obtain official passports before departure overseas.

- Those with family members who have special medical needs should confirm in advance that care will be available overseas.
- Military treatment facility access for civilian employees and family members may be limited to space-available care only.
- Host nation medical and dental providers may be the primary source of care, and availability or quality can vary by location.
- Family member appointments end according to the sponsor’s rotation date and may not extend beyond the specified limits tied to PCS, divorce, or a child reaching age 23.
- Family member preference depends on physically residing with the sponsor.
- Employees recruited from the United States may be eligible for certain foreign-area benefits such as Living Quarters Allowance, government quarters, and home leave, subject to approval.
- Overseas allowances may be available under DSSR and DoDI rules.
- Employees recruited outside the United States will have benefit eligibility determined at hire.
- Local laws or international agreements may affect the ability of a same-sex spouse or domestic partner to accompany the employee and receive certain benefits.

Foreign Education Notes
Degrees or coursework completed outside the United States from non-accredited institutions must be evaluated before they can be accepted. Acceptable evaluation routes include credential review by the International Education Research Foundation, recognition through an endorsed foreign institution list paired with proper translation and documentation, or evaluation by a graduate division of a regionally accredited university. Graduates of non-accredited institutions may also validate undergraduate study by completing at least five semester hours at a regionally accredited graduate college after graduate school admission.
Failure to provide every required item may result in an ineligible determination or reduce the overall rating.
