Job description
Role Overview
The Chief Building Official oversees building and permit administration for the City of Conroe. This role manages the processing and control of building and trade permits, and reviews construction plans and related documents to confirm compliance with applicable ordinances and codes. The work covers residential and commercial construction, including both renovation projects and new builds.
Responsibilities
- Manage the city’s building and permit administration functions.
- Coordinate and regulate the issuance of building and trade permits.
- Review construction plans, drawings, and documentation for compliance with code and ordinance requirements.
- Handle permit and plan review activities for residential, commercial, renovation, and new construction projects.
- Work with contractors to interpret and apply building, housing, and trade codes.
- Coordinate electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and structural work as needed.
- Evaluate construction values and support accurate permit-related decisions.
- Deliver strong customer service to builders, contractors, and the broader building community.
- Prepare correspondence and other related communication.
- Supervise staff effectively and maintain organized workflow in the permitting area.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- At least 10 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent mix of education and experience, is required.
- Background in the construction industry and prior municipal inspection experience is preferred.
- Experience with codes such as the International Building Code, Electrical Code, Plumbing Code, and related regulations is preferred.
- ICC certification as a Certified Building Official is required, or must be earned within one year of hire.
- A State Plumbing Inspector’s License is required, or must be obtained within one year of hire.
- Code Enforcement Officer Registration is preferred, or must be secured within one year of hire.
- Must be able to pass a background check and pre-employment substance abuse screening.
- A motor vehicle record check and job-related physician’s physical examination may also be required.
- Because this is a safety-sensitive role, random drug and alcohol testing may continue after hire.
- The job involves light physical effort, including lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally and up to 10 pounds to move objects, along with abilities such as balancing, climbing, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, reaching, speaking, talking, visual acuity, walking, and mental alertness.
