Role Overview and Responsibilities
The Assistant Designer for Baby Apparel will contribute substantially across design process, system management, and team collaboration aspects. Key responsibilities include:
- Design Process (50%): Develop expertise in segmented sketching, garment construction, fabric knowledge, color harmony, and development. Provide support in line development by maintaining color palettes, conducting market and trend analysis, updating line sheets and design cards, and managing product details during design reviews to ensure commercial success. Engage actively in the fitting process by creating and updating design cards, participating in fittings with the technical team, and managing ongoing garment adjustments.
- Systems, Calendar & Processes (30%): Advance proficiency with Illustrator for sketching, filling silhouettes, and compiling line sheets. Acquire mastery of design tools such as Miro, PLM, and Vibe. Understand and adhere to production calendars, support timely delivery of tasks, and assist in preparation for meetings through file printing, sample and swatch management for creative and market reviews.
- Collaboration & Communication (20%): Proactively anticipate and address tasks independently while maintaining close communication with managers and team members. Build relationships with cross-functional partners and actively participate in collaborative team meetings. Uphold Carter’s culture, values, and guiding principles, responding constructively and flexibly to challenges and changes.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Strong command of Adobe Creative Suite tools.
- Foundational knowledge in garment construction, pattern silhouettes, sewing methods, fabrics, and trims.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational capabilities.
- Effective time management paired with creative problem-solving aptitude.
- Intellectual curiosity combined with strong communication and analytical thinking skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-based creative environment.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret market trends relative to the brand, supported by a portfolio of professional work.
- Developed aesthetic sense aligned with Carter's brand and trend interpretation.
- Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems is preferred.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design, Apparel Design, or a closely related field.
- Up to three years of experience in apparel design, ideally focused on children’s clothing.
