Job description

Role overview

The Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach in overseeing every part of a college basketball program. The role centers on recruiting student-athletes, organizing practices and games, tracking academics, and helping with fundraising. Hagerstown Community College competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference.

Reporting and relationships

  • Reports to the Director of Athletics and ARCC.
  • Provides supervision and direction to student-athletes.
  • Works most closely with the Head Coach and the Director of Athletics and ARCC.

Key duties

  • Support the Head Coach across all areas of athletic program growth and day-to-day operations.
  • Follow the college and athletic department policies and procedures while working toward team and department goals.
  • Promote a student-first approach that places academic success ahead of athletic outcomes.
  • Help recruit student-athletes from the college’s service area who can benefit from both the academic and athletic environment.
  • Evaluate senior athletes in the service area for physical readiness, academic background, and personal character.
  • Build direct relationships with high school coaches and prospective athletes.
  • Help run organized practices and support conditioning and skills development for each player.
  • Work with the Coordinator of Athletic Advising and Eligibility to monitor academic progress.
  • Learn student financial aid options and coordinate with the Director of Athletics & ARCC on updates that may affect eligibility.
  • Support student-athletes who are transferring to four-year institutions in collaboration with the Coordinator of Athletic Advising and Eligibility.
  • Act as a positive example for student-athletes.
  • Show professionalism, respect, tact, and courtesy in interactions with student-athletes, staff, officials, and the community.
  • Maintain strong work habits, including punctuality, regular attendance, reliability, cooperation, and enthusiasm.
  • Stay informed about college policies, employee and student handbooks, and the academic and college calendars.

Working conditions and evaluation

The job may involve outdoor work in weather that can be uncomfortable, along with some indoor office duties. It also requires physical effort, including strength and agility, and may lead to noticeable fatigue. Performance is reviewed annually, with attention to student-athlete academic progress, class attendance, team success, graduation rates, and transfer outcomes.
