Job Overview
The City of Beaverton seeks a skilled attorney to join as an Assistant City Attorney 3. This role focuses on minimizing legal risks, maintaining compliance with laws, and supporting city operations through expert legal guidance on contracts, procurement, policies, and municipal regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, analyze, and negotiate various contracts, including procurement solicitations, intergovernmental agreements, real estate documents, and municipal ordinances ensuring legal compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
- Advise city personnel regarding legal questions about their duties and governmental powers.
- Provide training and education on law and governance to municipal staff.
- Develop strategies to manage complex contractual disputes and settlements.
- Draft, review, and testify on proposed ordinances, policies, and legislation at local, state, and federal levels.
- Guide departments on legislative changes and recommend modifications to city policies accordingly.
- Offer legal support on land use issues and enforcement of city codes through verbal and written advice.
- Manage project plans, timelines, and resources, preparing reports and recommendations as needed.
- Attend public meetings to provide legal advice to governing bodies, boards, and commissions.
- Foster an inclusive and cooperative workplace culture aligned with city values and goals.
- Perform additional duties as outlined in the Assistant City Attorney 3 class specification.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
- Minimum seven years of legal experience relevant to municipal law, or an equivalent combination of education and experience enabling essential function performance.
- Applicants with at least five years of directly-related municipal legal experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered for an underfill position until the seven-year threshold is met.
- Must be a member in good standing of the Oregon State Bar.
- Must pass reference, education, and background checks, including Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) fingerprinting and pre-employment drug screening.
- CJIS certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
Compensation and Benefits
- Monthly salary range of $11,054 to $14,814, including a 4% Cost of Living Adjustment effective July 1, 2026.
- Starting salary placement depends on evaluation of directly related work experience per Oregon Equal Pay Act guidelines.
- The city pays full employee and employer retirement contributions to Oregon Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).
