Job description

Role Overview

As an essential part of the Army West Point Athletics Association (AWPAA) Business Development and Fan Experience leadership team, the Assistant Athletics Director for Athletic Communications is charged with providing visionary communication strategies, media relations management, storytelling, and public relations guidance across 30 NCAA Division I athletic teams and over 1,200 cadet-athletes. This leadership role includes serving as the foremost communications liaison and strategic consultant for Army West Point Football and its Head Football Coach. Leading a team of communications specialists, the role advances the AWPAA Strategic Plan titled The Fruits of Victory, enhances the nationwide recognition of Army Athletics, and fosters impactful engagement with fans, alumni, media representatives, prospective recruits, and significant stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage football communications and strategic media relationships, acting as principal media relations contact for the football program and 1-2 additional sports.
  • Offer game day support for football, men’s and women’s basketball, hockey, volleyball, and men’s and women’s lacrosse.
  • Write, edit, and oversee the publication process and coordination of printed materials such as the football media guide, game programs, and game notes.
  • Identify compelling narratives about cadet-athletes and proactively pitch these stories to local, regional, and national media outlets.
  • Supervise a dedicated team comprising six full-time Athletic Communications professionals and available interns.
  • Generate publicity efforts for all 30 AWPAA sports and guarantee comprehensive athletic contests coverage from a communications perspective.
  • Oversee the creation of weekly press releases, compilation of team statistics and records, and their proper archiving and reporting to respective leagues and the NCAA.
  • Manage the Athletic Communications department's budget prudently.
  • Support the maintenance of the Army West Point Athletics website and all related social media accounts.
  • Maintain availability for events that occur during evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.

Compensation

The salary ranges between $70,000 and $80,000 annually. Hiring decisions generally aim to place compensation near the midpoint of this scale except under exceptional circumstances where candidates possess extraordinary qualifications or expertise.

Additional Information

The employer provides assistance with relocation expenses. This role is housed at USMA in West Point, NY, approximately one hour from New York City.
