Job description
Role overview
The Armaments, Avionics & Survival Equipment Workshop Controller is accountable for making sure all maintenance carried out off-aircraft is completed against approved technical data and to the required quality level. The role reports to the Deputy Depth Maintenance Manager and supports the organisation, administration, control, and efficiency of Part 145 Bay Operations.
This position requires a strong working understanding of Armament and Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE) trades, along with the ability to plan ahead tactically in a fast-changing environment shaped by customer demands and product customisation.
The post holder will work closely with QAF support personnel and will take ownership of planning maintenance events by scheduling and optimising the capability and capacity of Part 145 maintenance facilities. The expectation is that agreed work packages and maintenance events are planned, resourced, delivered, and controlled to time and cost, while maintaining a clear focus on customer requirements and committed timelines.
Core activities
- Lead the preparation and delivery of associated work packages, including technical instructions, manpower planning, and material requirements for each maintenance activity, while ensuring independent inspection and safety-critical tasks are clearly identified and recorded.
- Oversee and plan additional or unexpected work that arises during maintenance, including deferred work, so workload remains aligned with schedule needs. Update the statement of work and secure re-approval whenever changes occur.
- Ensure every off-aircraft maintenance task is completed in line with approved data and quality requirements.
- Support the Deputy Depth Maintenance Manager in the administration, control, and operational efficiency of Part 145 Bay Operations.
- Use tactical planning skills to respond to a changing environment driven by customer and product changes or customisation, including balancing resources and arranging training where standards shift.
- Maintain active communication with the customer and Qatari Air Force support teams.
- Provide information, statistics, and data for Operational Performance Reviews.
- Carry direct management responsibilities, including performance and development activities.
- Make sure all maintenance work is properly recorded and that airworthiness documentation is maintained on the relevant IT or paper-based systems. Prepare required reports, highlight issues, and escalate them when needed.
- Review and report on the effectiveness of AGE maintenance tasks, including any additional or emergent work, and identify trends, create solutions, or escalate concerns to management as appropriate.
- Build effective working relationships at a tactical level with Fleet Planning, Demand Management, the Part 145 organisation, Technical Services, Airworthiness Records, and third-party suppliers to achieve the required standards for Armament and Aerospace Ground Equipment maintenance.
- Maintain control and oversight of QAF consolidation, including logbook progression and tailored support needed to complete contractual obligations.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts that increase schedule effectiveness and create opportunities to optimise maintenance planning and execution.
Key accountabilities
- Performance indicators: manage regulatory activities effectively by setting targets, tracking progress, and building performance improvement plans. Prioritise work across individuals and teams to improve efficiency. Assess escalated issues for any impact on continuing airworthiness and drive resolution or escalation as needed.
- Procedures and standards: follow the regulatory framework, related procedures and standards, and all other applicable company requirements. Recommend changes where necessary.
- Management system assurance: ensure maintenance activities comply with the governance and assurance framework, including process confirmations and independent assurance audits. Support audit findings responses promptly, provide input for reviews, implement corrective improvements, and monitor their effectiveness.
- Continuing airworthiness assurance: manage and apply the CAA system within Airworthiness Records, support audits, respond to findings in a timely way, and contribute information to the relevant reviews.
- Statutory, regulatory, and legislative compliance: demonstrate a solid understanding of the relevant continuing airworthiness regulatory framework and apply it correctly. Support the introduction of regulation-driven changes into maintenance activities. Ensure compliance with all other relevant obligations, including ITAR, EaPW, ISO, and similar requirements.
- Contractual obligations: meet all applicable contract requirements.
Requirements
The role calls for an engineering apprenticeship completion, such as City & Guilds 2675 or 2661, or an equivalent qualification. A recognised engineering degree in aeronautical, mechanical, electrical, electronic, avionic, or another maintenance- and continuing-airworthiness-related discipline is also relevant.
The candidate must be fully experienced and capable in customer support, delivering a complete service to the customer.
Additional requirements include 2 years of practical experience in aviation safety standards and safe operating practices, plus at least 6 months of experience on type within the last 2 years.
Applicants should have a good understanding of the applicable Acceptable Means of Compliance documents, formal Production Planning and Control training, strong people management and motivational ability, and solid operational and business management experience in an aircraft maintenance environment.
Knowledge of effective safety management systems in an aircraft or related environment is needed, along with Human Factors standard course completion, E&PW awareness, ITAR awareness, IT literacy, and a valid UK driving licence.
Additional information
The role includes management responsibility, performance monitoring, airworthiness record control, reporting duties, and escalation responsibilities. It also involves working within regulatory, governance, assurance, and contractual frameworks.
Candidate must be prepared to work in an operational environment where priorities can change quickly and where coordination across multiple teams and external suppliers is essential.
