Anthropology Quality Assurance Lead

Role overview

This remote contractor position is for an Anthropology Quality Assurance Lead who will safeguard the quality, consistency, and reviewer performance across anthropology-related AI training initiatives. The work is paid on an hourly basis and is centered on checking AI-generated anthropology content as well as the output of trainers and QA reviewers. You will compare deliverables against project rubrics, give clear written feedback, and help maintain high standards across distributed expert teams.

The role focuses on judging anthropological accuracy, cultural context, use of theory, ethnographic sensitivity, methodological soundness, ethical awareness, bias detection, terminology, clarity, formatting, instruction adherence, and overall alignment with project expectations. You will also identify repeated quality problems, share updates with trainers and QA contributors, support onboarding, keep documentation current, and help re-engage contributors who are inactive.

This opportunity sits within a fast-scaling AI data services organization that supplies training data to major AI companies and foundation-model labs. The work contributes directly to improving AI systems by ensuring anthropology data is accurate, culturally respectful, research-informed, ethically responsible, and consistent with client needs.

The selection process includes an AI interview, a domain-specific assignment, and a conversation with a recruiter. There is not an immediate project attached to this role; however, qualified candidates may be contacted first when relevant work becomes available and may also gain access to future opportunities through the expert network.

Responsibilities

• Carry out quality checks on anthropology tasks, catch issues early, and share feedback with contributors while escalating repeated or serious problems.
• Review AI-produced anthropology explanations, ethnographic summaries, cultural comparisons, archaeology content, human evolution material, and social reasoning for correctness and sensitivity.
• Keep trainers and QA reviewers informed on Discord about new guidance, process updates, expectations, and anthropology-specific review standards.
• Answer questions from trainers and QA reviewers in a timely and precise way, especially on cultural context, ethnographic methods, archaeology, human evolution, ethics, representation, and rubric interpretation.
• Reach out to inactive contributors, encourage them to return to work, track follow-ups, and highlight availability concerns when necessary.
• Build and maintain project documentation such as style guides, trackers, FAQs, quality notes, examples, honeypots, calibration tasks, and onboarding resources.
• Organize and lead onboarding or training sessions to explain workflows, rubrics, quality expectations, and anthropology-specific review requirements.
• Make sure review standards are applied consistently across all trainers and QA contributors as project requirements change.
• Identify culturally insensitive, stereotyped, outdated, unsupported, ethnocentric, or otherwise problematic content and flag it appropriately.
• Suggest process improvements, close recurring quality gaps, and help design scalable QA workflows for anthropology AI training projects.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD in Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, Linguistic Anthropology, Sociology, Area Studies, Museum Studies, or a closely related discipline.
• Strong command of English for guideline interpretation, team communication, and detailed written feedback.
• At least 3 years of relevant experience in anthropology research, teaching, ethnography, archaeology, museum or heritage work, cultural analysis, academic writing, fieldwork, or similar work.
• Solid understanding of anthropological theory, cultural relativism, ethnographic approaches, kinship, ritual, language-culture relationships, material culture, human evolution, archaeology, ethics, and representation.
• Ability to assess work against detailed rubrics and detect stereotyping, ethnocentrism, weak contextualization, unsupported claims, outdated terminology, methodological mistakes, or ethically problematic framing.
• Familiarity with areas such as ethnography, participant observation, archaeological methods, human origins, kinship systems, religion and ritual, migration, colonialism, Indigenous studies, museum ethics, or linguistic anthropology is preferred.
• Prior experience guiding or supporting remote teams of researchers, educators, reviewers, fieldworkers, annotators, or QA staff is strongly preferred.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced remote environment with tools such as Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, trackers, dashboards, and project management platforms.
• Very strong attention to detail and organization, with the ability to manage style guides, FAQs, trackers, onboarding content, calibration tasks, and documentation.
• Experience in AI training, data annotation, LLM evaluation, social science QA, academic review, cultural sensitivity review, or rubric-based review is a significant advantage.
