Animal Keeper at Brandywine Zoo

Introduction

The Brandywine Zoo, operated by Delaware State Parks with support from the Delaware Zoological Society, is a small facility housing diverse mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Position Overview

This year-round Animal Keeper position involves diverse duties such as daily feeding, cleaning, observation of animals within assigned areas, basic upkeep, interacting and educating the public through talks, exhibit and grounds maintenance, operant conditioning, and record keeping. Work occurs indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions, requiring availability on weekends and holidays as scheduled.

Core Responsibilities

• Advance the zoo's mission of encouraging environmental conservation through engaging educational encounters between visitors and wildlife.
• Support AZA's goals relating to animal welfare, conservation, and public engagement.
• Collaborate with zookeepers, veterinarians, behavior specialists, and curators to deliver high-quality animal care.
• Monitor and report animals' health and behavior.
• Maintain clean, safe, and functional animal habitats and zoo facilities.
• Perform upkeep of grounds and equipment.
• Respond knowledgeably to visitor inquiries and provide educational information about animal care and handling.
• Keep thorough and accurate records using digital tools including Zoological Information Management Systems.
• Exhibit professionalism, reliability, effective communication, and a positive demeanor.
• Fulfill additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Minimum six months experience caring for animals, including feeding and observation, obtained in environments like zoos, animal clinics, or shelters.
• At least six months experience documenting and interpreting animal health and behavioral observations.
• Educational background or knowledge in biology, natural resources, wildlife management, or environmental studies.
• Possession of a valid, non-restricted driver’s license.

Additional Information

This is a non-benefit eligible, casual/seasonal position without pension or healthcare benefits.

Upon conditional offer, candidates must complete a two-step tuberculin skin test as part of the hiring process.
