About the Role
Oranga Tamariki is offering new career opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau. These permanent Allied Support Worker positions are designed to provide consistent operational support to frontline Social Work teams and address ongoing service demands. By strengthening team capacity and continuity, these roles are a stable, ongoing part of the Oranga Tamariki workforce.
The Allied Support Worker role is non-regulated and does not involve statutory social work activities or case management. These positions support qualified Social Workers and supervisors by enabling them to focus on their core responsibilities. The role includes assisting with home visits, administrative tasks, and transporting tamariki and rangatahi.
Responsibilities
- Provide on-demand support to teams based on daily operational needs.
- Assist social workers with entering case notes and other data into the CYRAS case management system and other information systems.
- Safely transport tamariki and rangatahi to various locations, including appointments, school, and sports activities.
- Aid social workers in setting up and managing administrative tasks for Family Group Conferences (FGC).
- Support tamariki and rangatahi during times outside of school or while awaiting placement.
- Manage administrative arrangements for tamariki transitioning between placements or programmes.
- Assist tamariki and rangatahi with settling into school or returning after absences.
- Conduct supervised access/visitations, including driving clients, supervising contact, and documenting interactions. This may involve weekend and after-hours work.
- Cultivate collaborative working relationships with internal colleagues and external partners.
What You Will Bring
This is a high-trust, safety-critical role for children's workers that requires sound judgment, emotional resilience, and a high degree of reliability. We are seeking applicants with experience in the following areas:
- Community work assisting or supporting individuals in need.
- Working with Māori and/or Pasifika cultures.
- Handling emotionally charged situations with empathy towards people's challenges.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with peers and stakeholders.
Skills
- Proficient written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Capacity to maintain a calm, professional demeanor in emotionally complex situations and perform under stress.
- Understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural practices, including tikanga Māori and Pacific peoples' culture.
- Skill in managing sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
- Ability to uphold and implement the principles of Te Tiriti ō Waitangi in practice.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Suite applications.
Qualifications and Licence
- A recognized Social Services qualification is desirable.
- A clean, current full driver's licence is essential, along with a willingness to operate Ministry vehicles. (Past convictions will be assessed on a case-by-case basis).
