Position Overview

Middle Seat is looking for a precise and organized Accounting Associate to be part of our Finance team, reporting directly to the Finance Director. This role involves managing daily accounting activities to ensure accurate, complete, and timely financial records. Ideal for candidates with a solid grasp of accounting fundamentals who handle large volumes of transactions, resolve reconciliation issues, maintain orderly records, and aid in month-end closings.

This is a pragmatic role focusing on transactional accounting and general ledger tasks encompassing payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and ledger maintenance. The position requires occasional travel and might necessitate working outside regular hours for business events.

Core Responsibilities

  • Accounts Receivable: Invoice clients regularly, track payment statuses, post payments, reconcile non-electronic deposits, pursue overdue payments with reminders and escalation, and resolve billing discrepancies.
  • Accounts Payable: Process new vendors, review and code invoices, maintain vendor information, reconcile statements, monitor outstanding payables, and ensure timely IRS 1099 filings.
  • Payroll: Post payroll reports to the ledger and allocate expenses properly by classification.
  • General Accounting: Support month-end closing by reconciling bank and credit card accounts, recording transactions for revenues, expenses, and media spend, manage finance communication, assist in reports and tax filings, collaborate on budgeting, maintain fiscal policy documents, and handle paid media account reconciliations and refunds.
  • Additional Duties: Conduct transaction investigations, assist in ad hoc reporting, propose process enhancements, and communicate effectively with the Finance Director to keep them well informed.

Qualifications

  • Highly organized with extreme attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Professional and discreet handling of sensitive and confidential financial information.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Preferred experience with startup or rapidly growing companies.
  • Capable of independent work and managing multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Providing broad financial administrative support across teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field preferred; alternatively, associate degree plus relevant experience considered.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online, Justworks, Bill.com, and Ramp is beneficial.
  • Strong skills in Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel are required.

Benefits

  • Full coverage for health, dental, and vision insurance with zero deductible health plans.
  • Access to wellness programs including memberships to One Medical, Health Advocate, and Talkspace.
  • Profit-sharing plan offering a stake in company growth.
  • Monthly reimbursement up to $75 for phone or internet expenses.
  • 6% employer matching contribution to 401(k) retirement savings.
  • 20 paid vacation days plus two floating holidays and unlimited sick leave.
  • Commuter benefits for public transit and coworking/office space stipends for remote employees.
  • 12 weeks paid parental leave.
  • $100 monthly student loan reimbursement.
  • $350 monthly mental health benefit.
  • $1,000 annually for professional development opportunities.

This is a remote full-time role based in Washington, D.C., or accessible remotely, involving occasional travel for company gatherings. The position is not part of a bargaining unit. Middle Seat values diversity and inclusivity, welcoming applicants from diverse backgrounds including women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
