Job Overview

The Accountant will handle comprehensive accounting duties to support the STRIDES project aimed at boosting infectious disease detection systems in Ghana. Key functions include monthly consolidation of financials, journal entry processing, cash and payment management, responding to financial inquiries, and aiding trainings. The role participates in audits, system updates, and accounting procedure enhancements to ensure smooth project financial operations.

Responsibilities

  • Apply accounting principles in budgeting, forecasting, cost accounting, and fiscal processes.
  • Conduct live financial system training sessions to support field programs.
  • Review and consolidate monthly Ghana Country Office financial reports for accuracy and adherence to guidelines.
  • Perform account reconciliations and maintain subsidiary ledgers ensuring financial data integrity.
  • Assist timely processing and disbursement of payments including VAT reimbursements and subcontractor financial reviews.
  • Manage financial files of the Project and Ghana office.
  • Support various financial analyses and closing of accounting records.
  • Coordinate reconciliation of sub-recipient accounts with the General Ledger.
  • Review interdepartmental cash requests and journal entries.
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests and prepare risk assessment reports.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Apply GAAP and related accounting standards for financial reporting.
  • Utilize program-specific accounting knowledge and various IT systems effectively.
  • Compile and audit financial statements for accuracy and compliance.
  • Communicate financial findings clearly and prepare detailed reports.
  • Maintain data integrity, identify discrepancies, and adhere to internal controls.
  • Prepare technical and written accounting documents and collaborate effectively within the organization.

Problem-Solving & Impact

  • Identify routine accounting and system issues, resolving standard problems independently and escalating complex ones.
  • Explain accounting trends and discrepancies in relation to budget and forecasts.
  • Ensure appropriate audit trails and timely completion of month-end closing and audit requests.

Supervision

  • Perform tasks under general supervision, receiving detailed guidance for new assignments.
  • Support recruitment and assist in performance appraisals under the guidance of senior management.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or international equivalent in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience delivering high-quality customer service and handling complex ledger accounts with strict adherence to internal controls.
  • Experience with computerized accounting software and advanced spreadsheet skills required.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
  • Prior NGO experience is preferred, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Working Conditions and Technology

  • Work performed in a typical office environment requiring long hours at a computer.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended durations.
  • Standard office technology usage including PC/laptop, Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint, and communication tools such as Skype, Zoom, or Teams.

Travel

Travel requirements are minimal, under 10% of work time.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is indexed between USD 9,000 and 13,000 annually, with consideration given to experience, education, internal equity, market pay, and budget. Salary offers reflect these factors including promotional guidelines for internal candidates.
