Role overview
Join the College of Creative Arts at Massey University as an Art Studio Technician, where you’ll help deliver practical and technical support across teaching, research, exhibitions, and creative production. The role spans Fine Art, Design, Screen Arts, Commercial Music, Matauranga Toi Māori, and related areas, working within studio, workshop, and gallery settings.
You’ll be part of the Technical Services Team, contributing specialist knowledge in studio processes, workshop methods, audio-visual systems, and exhibition installation. The position is focused on helping students, researchers, and staff bring ambitious creative work to life while keeping workspaces safe, functional, and well run.
Key duties
- Assist with a broad mix of studio-based creative work across Fine Art, Design, and connected disciplines.
- Demonstrate and support painting techniques, including stretching canvas, preparing surfaces, and making pigment-based paint.
- Help with sculpture, object-making, and workshop fabrication using tools, equipment, and materials safely.
- Support exhibition build, deinstallation, packing, handling, and logistics across gallery and project spaces.
- Contribute to exhibition planning and presentation through lighting, hanging systems, AV setup, and spatial installation.
- Maintain and troubleshoot AV equipment such as projectors, monitors, speakers, and playback systems.
- Work directly with students and staff during classes, workshops, exhibitions, and events.
- Support teaching through demonstrations, inductions, and hands-on studio guidance.
- Help keep studios, workshops, and gallery spaces organised, efficient, and safe.
- Track consumables, maintain equipment, and manage inventory so technical areas stay operational.
- Partner with academic and technical colleagues on teaching, research, and creative projects.
Candidate profile
We’re seeking someone with a Fine Arts degree or a closely related qualification, or equivalent experience in industry. You should have practical experience supporting studio-based creative practice and a solid background in installing and deinstalling exhibitions.
This role suits a person who can solve problems across different projects and disciplines, communicate clearly, and work collaboratively with staff and students. A strong commitment to health and safety in studios, workshops, and galleries is important, along with a readiness to engage with Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Tikanga Māori, and Te Reo Māori in the workplace.
