Location

NYC-area candidates will work in a hybrid model with two days per week onsite in the office, while candidates outside NYC but within the United States can work fully remotely.

Role Overview

The first dedicated Scrum Master is sought to manage and synchronize the delivery rhythm across four teams. You will establish a cohesive and consistent "Scrum at Chalice" culture, facilitate the teams, protect their focus, and guide the organization towards enhanced delivery practices. Your role is facilitative rather than managerial—you will own the delivery process instead of the product content.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Scrum ceremonies including daily standups, sprint planning, backlog refinement, and sprint reviews for three Scrum teams, while facilitating retrospectives for all four teams. Ensure these events are scheduled and adhere to their allocated time.
Manage sprint opening and closing cycles within Jira, including handling unfinished tasks rollover and setting up new sprints once Product Owners approve completed work and objectives.
Oversee continuous workflow using Kanban principles for the Forward Deployed team by maintaining work-in-progress (WIP) limits, replenishing queues, and coordinating onshore-offshore schedules instead of sprint cycles.
Identify and remove blockers within teams proactively; escalate cross-team dependencies and issues to the Technical Project Manager.
Monitor metrics such as velocity, cycle time, carryover, and WIP to track team health and flow; observe team morale and sustainability to identify areas needing attention.
Coach teams and Product Owners in agile methodologies to unify and continuously improve "Scrum at Chalice" practices across all teams.
Shield development teams from mid-sprint changes in scope and internal interruptions to maintain focus.
Support backlog maintenance by facilitating effective grooming sessions; the Product Owner retains authority over content and prioritization.

Collaboration

Product Owners manage backlog content, priorities, and roadmaps; the Scrum Master manages the operational delivery framework turning objectives into shipped increments.
The Technical Project Manager handles cross-team coordination and dependency management; you escalate blockers as needed while maintaining healthy team flow.
Engineering leadership and Tech Leads focus on architecture and technical direction; the Scrum Master ensures the teams are capable of executing within this framework.

Candidate Requirements

Minimum 3 years experience serving as a Scrum Master across multiple simultaneous delivery teams.
Expertise and fluency in both Scrum and Kanban methodologies.
Strong leadership skills including facilitation, coaching, conflict resolution, and influencing without formal authority.
Comfortable working within technical environments spanning software engineering, SRE/DevOps, data, and machine learning/data-science teams—coding is not required but understanding technical context is essential.
Data-driven mentality for measuring team health and driving continuous improvement, with hands-on experience using Jira.
Preferred but not mandatory: experience in fast-growing startups and exposure to programmatic advertising or ad-tech.

Certifications

While not required, credentials such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), Professional Scrum Master (PSM I/II), or equivalents are advantageous. Demonstrated practical experience is prioritized over formal certifications.
