Role Responsibilities

The School Counsellor supports students dealing with challenges related to their personal life, family, education, mental health, or career planning. Their role involves advocating for students and collaborating with individuals and organizations to encourage students’ academic, professional, personal, and social growth.

Counsellors assist students in assessing their abilities, interests, talents, and personalities to set viable academic and vocational objectives. Techniques include interviews, counseling interactions, and administering aptitude assessments.

Personal mental health counseling duties include providing psychological assistance and implementing therapeutic interventions to help students cope with social and emotional issues, delivered individually, in targeted small groups, or via school-wide well-being programs.

Main Duties

Support students' personal, social, and academic development and wellbeing
Track and evaluate individual student progress
Engage parents to discuss behavioral or support aspects
Take measures to prevent bullying and assist those affected
Teach job search skills such as resume preparation and interview techniques
Help students manage social, behavioral, and personal difficulties
Provide therapeutic interventions tailored to individual needs and arrange referrals to external services where appropriate
Focus on preventive counseling to equip students with life skills before challenges escalate, enhancing their overall growth
Offer specialized services like conflict resolution sessions and identify family-related issues that may impact student development

Specific Responsibilities

Career Counseling

Advise students on career choices and supply relevant career information
Help students explore careers to inform their academic course selection aligned with their interests
Maintain a career resources library or database accessible for students’ exploration
Coordinate with university departments and assist with university applications

Personal Mental Health Counseling

Engage individuals and groups of students on social, emotional, and developmental matters
Deliver culturally appropriate therapies considering adolescent social development influences
Identify students at social or emotional risk and collaborate with parents to refer them for external interventions
Promote student wellbeing through school-wide and community initiatives
Work closely with pastoral teams and safeguarding leaders

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counselling, or Psychology (with subsequent postgraduate counseling qualifications required for Psychology graduates)
At least two years of experience in school or equivalent counseling roles
